For his bedroom. He didn't even have the tact to request a painting by an American artist, and probably wanted a Van Gogh solely because they have topped the price charts and he would have bragged about that "I have the most expensive, because I am the greatest emperor ever!!" It's a small story but it says a lot about him I think, especially because AFAIK he doesn't give a proverbial rat's arse about art or artists, and seems to have the aesthetic taste of a barbarian. It's all about him. Would have been amusing to see the face on the director of the Guggenheim when they received this outrageous request! They wouldn't want their priceless painting coming back after his impeachment stinking of grease from thousands of cheeseburgers.
