John Mahoney, perhaps best known for his role as Frasier Crane's dad, has died at age 77.
For me, though, my favorite role he performed was in Barton Fink, where he played the alcoholic writer William Mayhew, who was a thinly disguised William Faulkner.
His imprint on the public consciousness will live on.

I thought that guy was older than that. He looked pretty old in Frasier.

I wish he lived beyond 77; 77 is too young, in my opinion.

He was the truly "smart" guy in Frasier. I don't know how he produced two sons like Frasier and Niles. He wasn't pompous at all.

Sad really. I really liked Frasier, it was like "Friends" but for smart people.

My favorite episode was Dinner at Eight, where they ate at the Timber Mill, and Niles complained about everything.

I like that it takes place in Seattle (where I am hoping to relocate, if I can afford it)

As I recall, they took after their cultured, high browed deceased mother.

He was a great actor,as they all were on Frasier.I still like watching the repeats of it no matter how many times I've seen them.

He was great in Frasier.

You see him in other classic 90's things . Was great as a supporting actor ( I believe he played a college professor) in "Moonstruck" (starring Nicholas Cage, and Cher).

I'm rather surprised he was only 77 myself. He was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammar. Quite an excellent actor. R.I.P!

Does anyone else know he was gay? That only seems significant to me considering the character he played of Frasier.

Interestingly both John Mahoney and David Pierce (played Niles Crane) are both gay

Gays have always found much more acceptance in the arts, including theater/entertainment.

He's was also English. Also of some significance considering the charater he played.

The actor who played Bulldog the soprts guy is slso gay. He said he hung out in sports bars to do research on how to act like a macho stright guy.

Niles never seemed the least bit stright outside of lusting after Daphne.

Same here. Frasier and Seinfeld are like the most re-watchable shows in existence. Either whole episodes or strings of clips.
