Abdulla Yameen and His Delusions of Grandeur

TL;DW: Abdulla Yameen (the president of the Maldives) is trying to shut down the Maldivian parliament because he is a right-wing maniac with delusions of grandeur. He also hates the UN because the UN wants him to respect the rights of gay people.

In response, the Maldivian progressives are fighting back. Sic semper tyrannis.

It's always nice when the Islamic far-right receives resistance from within the country.

Hopefully, Yameen won't ally himself with Western billionaires. He, theoretically, could stay in power if he does that. Leaders in developing countries, unfortunately, do that all the time.

After what he did to Mohammed Nasheed, why *should* we support him?

I never said that we should support him. Western billionaires are separate from the middle and lower classes in terms of interests.

Read about the history of the world and you will notice a pattern. Are you a dictator in the third world? Are you afraid of a progressive, liberal uprising? How will you keep those traitors, punks, hippies, nerds and queers under control?

All you need to do is suck up to Western businesses! They will finance politicians who think that you din do nuffin. Problem solved! It worked for Augusto Pinochet!

Today, King Salman and Xi Jinping are both sucking up to Western businesses. That's why they aren't being invaded!

... and this is why every country (especially America) needs proper anti-corruption legislation. When a democracy decays into plutocracy, any dictator can get away with murder (literally) with a financial agreement.

That's what I'm worried about here. I want the Maldivian progressives to succeed, but they'll probably "hurt business" in the process. This may trigger Western aggression.

Remember: America, Canada, Britain and Australia initially sided with Indonesia during the East Timor Genocide. Why? Suharto was a neoliberal capitalist swine. The people of East Timor were social democrats for the most part.

Stay informed. Don't be fooled.
