I don't think that hunting is inherently bad. I just think that it's wrong to hunt a threatened species and then take only a tiny piece of the carcass. That's unnatural.

Have you ever wondered why lions are used in European heraldry even though they aren't found in Europe? Check this map out.

This is sick.

Do we really want to contribute to this sickness?

Why do lions still live in sub-Saharan Africa? Black African people lived in sustainable harmony with the land until recently. Wild lions no longer live in Europe because the Romans used lions in their sick and twisted games.

Resist. Remove.

Was an animal obsessed aspie child, and as a child I used to wonder that too.

Why is it that Hercules fights lions in Greek mythology, and that Biblical dudes like Daniel got put into "lion's dens" when we all know that lions live way down in sub-Saharan Africa far from the Mediterranean/Middle eastern world?

Learned later that lions used to range FAR beyond sub-Saharan Africa as your map shows.

In fact the lions in our own zoo here in Washington are among the last of the "Atlas lions": a remnant population that lives in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. And there are also the lions of the Ghir Forest preserve in India (probably what that blue speck in India is that that arrow is pointing to on your map).

Centuries before the Romans the kings of Assyria loved to hunt lions in staged "hunts". Their army would release caged lions in open fields and the king would chase the lions in a chariot and shoot arrows at them. Didn't help much with lion conservation. And loved to chronicle the sport in stone in now famous reliefs. Image

It does not make sense to me to allow hunting of endangered animals like this. There is no way hunting lions helps preserve them. Do people really want to see the extinction of lions in their lifetime? Because all Trump is doing with this is helping that to happen.

Also just the other day I saw a map like the one posted here, and I was saddened with how much their population and ranges of habitat have declined and are still declining. It really did kind of put it into perspective.

Though I do recall hearing about the finding of two perfectly preserved cave lion cubs which is an extinct species of lion, meaning they still had intact DNA which could bring the species back and even help with over-all lion conservation.

I'm surprised Trump didn't put his two sons, Uday and Kusai, in charge along with Cecil's killer.

There are actually arguments to be made for it. I remember one particular instance I read about where one elder male lion held a very large territory and by extension the females in that area. He was still large and strong enough to fight off younger challengers, but he no longer mated and produced no cubs to bolster the lion population. Given that lion preservation is mostly a volunteer effort with little in the form of government aid, one can see how letting some rich a**hole with more money than brains pull the trigger and collect himself a shiny trophy in exchange for an absurd sum of money is a tempting proposition. Especially since that money then went towards hiring guards that protected the remaining lions against poachers.

Big game hunting is a vanity pasttime for obscenely rich thrill-sekeers: expensive rifles, expensive hunts, expensive trips and expensive trophies. But it would be an untruth to say that indulging them on a case-by-case basis with the conservation effort as the primary objective and benefactor hasn't been a boon, both for the conservation effort and for the economies of the countries in which these hunts take place.
