Ruby Rose cast as The CW's Batwoman

Quote:
The network has cast model-actress Ruby Rose to play Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman. The character will be introduced in the network’s annual DC crossover event this winter, plus the network is also developing a stand-alone series around the character.

The casting is an impressive name. Rose rose to fame after joining the cast of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black in season 3 as Stella Carlin, and has had stand-out movie performances in Pitch Perfect 3, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2 (where she had a rather intense fight scene with Keanu Reeves that bodes well for battling crime on the streets of Gotham). She’s also in the upcoming killer shark movie The Meg.

If Batwoman is picked up to series, the openly gay Rose — who identifies as gender fluid — will topline the first TV series focusing on an LGBT superhero. “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” reads the official logline. “But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

But first, Rose will make her debut in this year’s DC crossover event in December, which will include Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl (but not DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

What's the point in pitching an actor's sexuality, when the most important qualification for a role is whether or not the actor can act?

Money Money Money.

The want to appeal not only to the lesbian and gender fluid population but the social justice/progressive demographic. Those demographics tend skew middle and upper class millennial and that is who the advertisers that pay for these shows want.

Sad Sad Sad.

That's like trying to pitch a mediocre smartphone app as special merely because it was written by an aspie.

Oh that's nothing, if you want to talk agenda pushing check out CW's series Supergirl, the agenda pushing is so in your face it's nauseating. And I disagree ASPartOfMe, it's not wealthier millenials they're after, the entire station is geared to those between 16-24. It should be noted though the age group in question (whatever generational label they eventually decide to give it) is much more open to alternate sexualities than even the older millenials. To me it's 'agenda-pushing' to my nephew it's what him and his friends believe in, and it's what they want to see.

Yeah, crass brass-kissing to the most common denominator of the target audience!

Although I don't agree with this way of thinking, many in the lgbtq community want lgbtq actors to portray lgbtq characters. There are many people with aspergers who similarly complain when neurotypicals play atypical characters.

The issue with this way of thinking is - it automatically assumes the actor's sexuality. Say for example, early Marlon Brando played a role where he was attracted to the same sex. People would have similarly and incorrectly stated that yet again another straight guy was playing a gay or bi role. The closet muddles all of this.

Oh, no. Plenty of people just think lesbians are hot. Hence the desire to cash in on that.

And they're pushing this stuff to children in schools.

And thank God they are, the less homophobes ruining the world by proclaiming there’s a “gay agenda” the better - homophobes are sickening people that lead many children to kill themselves. I wish homophobes would do everyone a favor and disappear.

If showing same sex couples is an “agenda” I guess that means every Disney film ever made is political because it shows a straight couple. Oh lord, what are we to do?

What about me and many others... 8 years old, no idea what gay meant, never saw dudes kiss... yet I wanted to dance with Casper in ‘Casper’ because I thought Devon Sawa was cute. Only I didn’t know a word for it or what was going on. We’re born this way. Showing representation to children shows children that there are others like them.

An actual harmful thing that people aim to “push” on children is for them to not know or see that others like them go on to lead happy and normal lives.

16-24 year olds may be driving the sexual identity social revolution but they generally have less money to spend on the sponsers products.

You do not see many advertisers targeting men in our age group because they think we are out of touch and set in our ways so therefore there advertising will be ineffective. They usually target women because it is believed they make the purchases.

There is a phrase that describes a lot of non LGBTQ people who will watch this show because of sexuality of the lead charactor and the actress who will play her, “virtue signaling”.

I have no argument with that. Asian characters should be played by Asian actors (Hear that, Doctor Strange?), indigenous characters should be portrayed by indigenous peoples, African characters should be portrayed by African people ... et cetera.

Asking Jeffrey Tambor to portray a trans-gendered person was both insulting and short-sighted.

Oh, they still target our age group, especially when they use music we grew up with to sell incontinence-control products.

It's really no different from casting an A-list actor in a minor role just to draw in fans of that actor. Even though he or she may have only a minute or two of screen time, the producers know that there will be people watching the show who would otherwise not watch it at all.
