The comments section at that article is shocking.

Sample (but there's more):

This case is a bit odd. I'm not sure what to think. Why would you bring a mute autistic child to a park with a lake where you might not have good control of the kid. It's quite possible the kid slipped into the water and drowned.

Stephanie Gittinger>thenitenurse • 2 hours ago

Because they don't want to raise him in a bubble?

And you think those are the only two options?

hunter112>Stephanie Gittinger • an hour ago

If a kid is six years old and not able to speak, then maybe a bubble is the best thing for him. Sixty years ago, we used to instutionalize children like this. There's a happy medium someplace between that extreme and pretending he is normal.

Authorities widen search for missing autistic NC boy - Boy went missing during family outing to park

Quote:
The search for Maddox Scott Ritch, who is nonverbal, entered its fifth day early Wednesday as search crews patrolled overnight on foot and ATVs for the missing 6-year-old boy.

Gastonia Police Department said investigators got additional tip calls from people who were at the park Saturday when the boy vanished, and will continue using search drones.

He was last seen in the city's Rankin Lake Park. On Monday, local, state and federal authorities expanded their search 2 miles beyond the park's boundaries, city police said.

Maddox's parents, who have not been identified, worked with law enforcement to record messages that search teams are piping into the park to coax him out, FBI supervisory special agent Jason Kaplan said.

"If he's lost in the woods, he'll be able to hear those messages played, and we're hoping that he'll come to the words of his mother and his father," Kaplan said.

The park's grounds include trails and paved walking paths, an 80-acre lake, about a dozen picnic shelters and an 18-hole disc golf course, according to city of Gastonia's website.

The expanded search effort includes ground teams with canines and aircraft, including drones. Police are also employing sonar and infrared technologies.

Authorities are draining water from the lake to expose more of the shoreline for examination, and police are contacting businesses around the park to see if they have useful surveillance video, Gastonia police Chief Robert Helton said.

"We want to make sure that we're checking every possible spot to find this child," he said.

Helton said agents and detectives from more than a dozen local, state and federal agencies are conducting interviews and have generated more than 80 leads.

Maddox was last seen with his father and another adult at the park around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, according to CNN affiliate WSOC in Charlotte.

"They were walking around the lake," Gastonia city spokeswoman Rachel Bagley told WSOC. "They got around to the back side of the lake. He started running, according to the parents, and when they started running after him, they lost sight of him, and no one has seen him ever since."

On Sunday, police canceled all activities at the park and closed it to the public until further notice.

Authorities said they are investigating all possibilities into what led to Maddox's disappearance...

Police said Maddox is 4 feet tall and weighs 45 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes. Maddox was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt with the words "I am the man," along with black shorts and closed-toe sandals.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to his location.

The North Carolina authorities in this case needed to start searching well beyond 2 miles when they first started.

When I was 4, I decided to visit my grandmother who lived three hours away by car. So I got on my trike and started off. I was found hours later considerably more than two miles away (even more than that, including the twists and turns I made to get there). This case doesn't involve cycling, but believe me, two miles is not difficult.

We can only pray that his fate is not tragic, either by being found dead in the lake (like the Kaufman County, Texas child) or by being the target of a predator.

One of the problems that society faces is elderly parents who have Alzheimers wondering off. Technology has been developed to allow their children to track the movements of their parents. These GPS tracking devices could easily be modified to track non verbal autistic children.

Here is a link to several of these devices. What Are the Top 10 Products to Track My Elderly Loved One’s Location?

Another internet search shows similar devices exists for autistic children. 7 Tracking Devices to Find a Lost Child with Autism

Thanks for posting those links, jimmy m. I have bookmarked them since my husband with dementia has sometimes gone on walkabout without telling me. So far he has always returned ... with the help of police.

Either not the same boy, or it is a fake news article.

One time a Peace-Officer stopped me for «jay-walking» when I was in Bellevue, Washington, some years back, standard question of course: «Can I see your Driver's License ?» (I didn't have one because one of their officers took it from me earlier that year and did not return it; this was one of the beginnings of my experiences with learning about the law-system and how Driver's Licenses actually do not belong to you but belong to the State).
(Note: I refer to him as a «peace-officer» because he was reasonable with me that day, whereas with many «police» encounters in the U.S.A., they often accuse members of the public of crimes that were not actually committed or write tickets for senseless regulations; for example, I read a complaint/rant from someone who got ticketed for letting his grass grow more than 2 inches, and he was like, how the hell is he supposed to mow the grass when it was raining constantly for the last two weeks as an example of how unreasonable those people are that some call PIGs)

Anyway, I told him why I had no Driver-License, then he was like, «Well, hopefully it wasn't one of our guys,» but I had to drop a truth-bomb that, «Unfortunately, it was, which is actually kind of surprising» for a police-department official of that particular city, considering how they have a reputation for not being «corrupt» at all. And he agreed, that was surprising, then he asked for my help about a missing child...

Unfortunately, I could not help him with finding the child who had gone missing since a week (or was it two?) before that incident, due to having been so busy with working constantly and no time for research; how-ever, I was aware of various «criminal» operations in existence in society, and was concerned about whether a «kidnapping» had occurred. Bellevue has a very low crime-rate compared to other locations so the incident being a kidnapping seemed very unlikely. Regardless, the loss of young boys and/or girls is always at tragedy, but I did think about the documented cases of Remote-Viewing that I had read about where missing objects were successfully located, but it's not really established enough of a protocol for rescue-workers to be able to use effectively and consistently (perhaps some day though).

My parents acted like they were secret service agents in charge of watching a president's kid. Always kept me within arm's reach and never took their eyes off me for a second. Even now that's still pretty much the case since I get lost easily.

It's sad, but accidents happen. Now the question not being enunciated, but just hanging in the air, is was the death accidental?

That's being investigated.

I thought that comment was good. They do make a good point. The parents want to give their child a normal life and a normal childhood despite his autism. They don't want to keep him sheltered where he never experiences the real world.
