Trump administration to send U.S. cellphones a test alert on Thursday

Quote:
The messages will bear the headline “Presidential Alert”, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in a statement this week. Phones will make a loud tone and have a special vibration, said FEMA, which will send the alert.

The test message, scheduled for 2:18 p.m. EDT on Thursday, will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”...

Since the wireless emergency alert system began in 2012, it has issued over 36,000 alerts for situations such as missing children, extreme weather and natural disasters, but never a presidential directive.

FEMA said in a statement the alerts can only be used for national emergencies. The president has sole responsibility for determining when the national-level alerts are used...

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its role in planning the test alert.

The administration will send a test alert via radio and television broadcasters two minutes after the cell phone alert. It will interrupt programming for about one minute, FEMA said.

Cell towers will broadcast the WEA test for approximately 30 minutes beginning at 2:18 p.m.

Oh dear god. Who thinks once Trump has the ability to tweet to everyone, he WILL tweet to everyone? At any time, for any reason (most of the said reasons being butthurt ego).

I think THAT is a national emergency.

It's not a political message, but an emergency test message sent from President Donald Trump as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's system to warn the public in cases of national emergencies.

A majority of cell phone users will receive an alert on Thursday, September 20, with the header "Presidential Alert" and the message, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."

WEA was technically launched in April of 2012, but this will be the first time FEMA has tested the system on the presidential level in hopes to work out the kinks, the agency said in a press release this week.

The presidential alert is one of three kinds of alerts in the FEMA's WEA system, which also notifies the public about extreme weather or missing children, also known as AMBER alerts.

The agency [FEMA] is required by law to conduct a nationwide test of its public alert systems no less than once every three years.

Thirty minutes?!? This is much more than a "test." It borders on propaganda at the level of "...just keeping all Americans safe. By the way, the federal midterm elections are just 48 days away!"

Dang!

If I wasn’t expecting an important call on that day, I would just leave my cell phone switched off.

I predict that this will be more than just a test. I predict that Mr. Trump and his buddies at the Kremlin will use this system as a means to spread his lies and propaganda to everyone who owns a mobile phone. I predict that anyone who does not acknowledge the broadcast will have their names put on a list of “Traitors & Rebels” when Mr. Trump finally gets around to declaring martial law.

... or not...

Trump could use this system to mobilize his white supremacist base to try to overturn the voting result and prevent the seating of the winners after the GOP loses the midterm elections in November.

Of course, Trump will claim that the election was rigged. Trump could then declare a "national emergency" and use this emergency phone system to call upon his base to back him up, bringing their guns and ammunition with them. Everyone should be aware of this possibility and if Trump tells his base to arm themselves and massively and forcefully gather to cancel the election results, shut down court houses and so on, the counter-protesters should be in equal readiness. After all, the phone calls will go to everybody.

This scenario may well not happen, but the mere fact that it could happen and that in this day and age it is actually plausible should be a warning. As we used to say a long time ago, "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention".

Conspiracy Theory! No propaganda! Just a test, similar to the tornado warning sirens whenever there is a major storm passing through. September 20th will come and go just another uneventful day.

Absolutely wrong. Devices that don't support this protocol may crash & the interruption could disrupt networks or devices during actual emergencies.

"9-1-1. We've IDed your address. What is your emergency?"

"It's not here. It's in the apartment complex across the street. There's a fire and there's a woman with a baby trying to get out on her balcony."

"Can you give us her location, what floor she's on?"

"Sure. She's on the ..."

bzzzzt

"This is your president speaking. I'm sending out this fake news about a national emergency just to let you know we're watching. You got any complaints about any of this, remember Hillary's emails and Obama's real birthplace".

This is what I was thinking. During those 30 minutes of "national importance," how will legitimate emergencies be recognized, let alone assisted?

That is precisely why you have FEMA conduct a nationwide test of its public alert systems no less than once every three years in order to make sure there are no glitches.

Please, please, God, don't let him know I'm hiding in here. I'm only 8 years old and my daddy will be home from work in just a few minutes and he'll stop that fiend from hurting me. Just don't let him hear me -

I'm sure that you'll be happy to have made sure that there are no glitches.

The reality is that this is just a government back door capable of disabling or at least crashing devices you're supposed to own.

That may in fact just be the only good thing about poverty - - not having to suffer the orange buffoon's tweets!
