That is mind blowing on several levels.

Mindblowing to me probably because I am not an expert. It all looks bizarre.

First its mind blowing that a one time official in the Chinese security apparatus would end up a high official in a western international police organization. It strikes me as being as if a former Soviet KGB head were to become the head of the US FBI, or the CIA, or of Scotland Yard. Hiring a fox to run the hen house.

Second:he goes back to his homeland and disappears. At first I thought it was the Chinese government kidnapping him to get intelligence on the West (what he knows through running Interpol). But from reading the article it looks more like an internal Chinese thing. if indeed it is the Chinese government kidnapping him. It might have more to do with him being cronies with corrupt Chinese officials who had been purged. And not about Bejing trying screw the West. Strange wrapped in strange.

He's actually not missing. He's being held political prisoner in China: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/07/worl ... ngwei.html

In that case he shouldn't have gone to China in the first place.
