Parkinson’s disease may originate in the appendix:

No, it’s not completely conclusive, nor a treatment, but like the article says - it’s an exciting new avenue of research to explore.

None of this surprises me, personally. The gut is the second brain and our brains and nervous systems function in balanced harmony with it - or at least they’re supposed to. IMO, many mental health & neurological issues will be treated digestively in the not so distant future. Until then, it’s nice to see that researchers are connecting the dots and moving us all towards a better understanding of our own bodies, health, and medicine.

I think the difficulty will be in determining which of the thousands of species of gut bacteria produce the alpha synuclein protein that is the central problem in Parkinsons and then eliminating them. It looks as though once introduced into the brain, it multiplies on its own:

Quote:
Perhaps, and according to experimental evidence, “it can travel up the nerve that connects the G.I. tract to the brain,” says Labrie. “And if it were to enter the brain, it can seed and spread from there and have neurotoxic effects that could eventually lead to Parkinson’s disease.”

It's certainly a major advance, though, and they certainly have their work cut out for them.

^Of course that’s likely difficult.. but it’s an upgrade from impossible considering before this they didn’t even know where to begin looking.
