Ranking Roger (The English Beat, General Public), dead at 56

We’re sad to report that Roger Charlery, aka The (English) Beat and General Public vocalist Ranking Roger, died Tuesday, March 26 at age 56. He had been fighting cancer for a while. The sad news was shared via The Beat’s Facebook page, saying “Sadly Roger past away a few hours ago peacefully at his home surrounded by family.”

Roger’s distinctive toasting — and singing — style was one of the many things that made 2 Tone greats The Beat’s sound so distinctive, heard on such classic singles as “Ranking Full Stop,” “Stand Down Margaret,” and “Drowning.” When The Beat broke up after their third album, Roger and Dave Wakeling would form General Public who made three albums together, including their great 1984 new wave debut. Roger also made a few solo albums, including 1988’s Radical Departure, and had his own version of The Beat going in the UK, having just released new album Public Confidential back in January. His autobiography, I Just Can’t Stop It, is due out later this year.

I've never heard of this person----but he died too young.

I had Mirror in the Bathroom stuck in my head all day yesterday .... just like I had Monkees' songs in my head the day Peter Tork died.

Their songs are very much infectious songs that do get stuck in your head.

I still have not completly gotten over Mark Hollis of Talk Talk dying last month another group who was part of the soundtrack of my young adulthood. I was completly into the New Wave/80's alternative stuff going on especially in the UK at the time. Decades before my Autism diagnosis these people showed me it was ok to be different and there was others out there as these records had some measure of success. I sort of look back on it as preperation for my ASD diagnosis

I have come to expect the musicians of my youth and early adulthood to die young of drugs, alcohol, and burnout. But now they are succumbing to normal old age maladies and that hurts more.

At first, it did not register with me who he was, until...

I remembered that General Public's song "Tenderness" was used in the 1985 movie Weird Science, near the end where they drive their new girlfriends home. It is sad to see another piece of the 1980s is now gone. RIP
