California car ramming suspect targeted Muslim pedestrians

8 people hurt in incident, including 13-year-old girl left in a coma

An Iraq War veteran deliberately drove into a group of pedestrians because he thought some of the people were Muslim, California authorities said Friday.

Isaiah Joel Peoples, 34, faces eight counts of attempted murder for injuring eight people, including four who remain hospitalized. The most seriously injured is a 13-year-old Sunnyvale girl of South Asian descent who is in a coma with severe brain trauma.

"New evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted the victims based on their race and his belief that they were of the Muslim faith," Sunnyvale police chief Phan Ngo said.

Peoples appeared briefly in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Friday. He did not enter a plea and is being held without bail.

The former U.S. Army sharpshooter experienced post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq, his family said. Peoples' attorney, Chuck Smith, said Friday that the crash was in no way deliberate.

"This act was clearly the product of some mental disorder or mental defect," Smith said after the hearing.

Jay Boyarsky, chief assistant district attorney for Santa Clara, said the charges carry a sentence of life in prison. He said they will file hate crime allegations if warranted.

"There is very appalling and disturbing evidence that at least one or two of these victims were targeted based on the defendant's view of what their race or religion may have been," he said.

Three adults also remain hospitalized with injuries that include broken limbs and fractures.

This will be an interesting case.

He was an Army sharpshooter, served in Iraq, presumably, trained to kill Muslim people.

Now, in civilian life, he claims "mental defect" from military service PTSD that somehow triggered him to kill perceived Muslim people.

Weird --->Witness Don Draper said he marched over to Peoples' car after he crashed, and he found the driver muttering over and over, "Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus."

So that was Friday, then the San Diego area synagogue terrorist attack today. I'm really fed up w/all this white nationalist terrorist crap.

Yes, I see that. You don't need to be white to support white nationalist bs when your job used to be to kill Muslims for a living in Iraq. He's doing what he was trained to do and in the context of the US, he's supporting white nationalist politics or another term I like, US apartheid. This s**t has got to stop and whether you like to hear it or not, Trump's at the center of the problem. I'm sick of living in a fascist f*****g society b/c white people voted for him or try to ignore the apartheid, caste system that dominates US society. And they do it b/c they're scared of forces unleashed by Wall Street, which happily abets the targeting of black, brown, yellow, red and other people of color here and abroad. For some reason many, if not most whites, think they benefit from this s**t, which in some ways they do, the same way they did under slavery, when we were genociding and stealing millions of acres of Natives' lands, during Jim Crow, as we're doing to Latinos now. Frankly, it makes me wish I wasn't white, it's f*****g shameful, barbaric and disgusting.

I think Michael Moore would call this "the awful truth"
But when you live in a system that is a product of a post-colonial European empire we are also recipients from the benefits from our colonising ancestor's actions so I guess we are passive participants in this exercise.

Obviously the world is going nutso as we speak (bombing of Christian churches in the US South, and in Sri Lanka, and synagogues, and mosques,around the world getting the spree shooter treatment),but...

How would you, as a car driver, know what a pedestrian's religion is?

If I were crazy enough to want to mow down say..Mike Huckabee supporters on the street, I wouldn't know who to shoot/runover and who not to. I don't have enough Xray vision to look into your skull to see what creed you believe in. So I wouldn't be able to tell at a distance whether to run over you or not.

Some Muslims dress distinctly from other Americans, but many do not. Muslims are stereotypically Middle Eastern, but many Middle Easterners are not Muslim, and MOST Muslims in the world live in southeast Asia, and not in the Middle East. And Muslims are found in every race. If that guy in the pic above is the perp, then he himself has an "ethically ambiguous" look that could be taken for Middle Eastern.

This guy adds a new layer of crazy to this current wave of crazy that is sweeping the planet.

Actually -this reminds me of a tragedy back in the 80's Two White unemployed Detroit auto workers attacked and beat an Asian American guy to death with baseball bats because ...they thought he was Japanese (Japan was perceived to be decimating our auto industry back then). He was actually Chinese American. But the two guys were angry at Japan so they attacked him because they took him for Japanese. The judge slapped their wrists, and pretty much let them go (because "what can I do? Theyre obviously aren't gonna do it again!").

That he's just a victim of casual forces that made him do this.

Oh, and stop blaming whites for the actions of non-whites. No white person held a gun to the driver’s head and ordered him to run over those people — he did this on his own initiative, nothing more.

Blaming whites — even white nationalists — for the actions of one demented black man is racism, poure and simple.

The motivation is most likely religiously based not racial.

So his PTSD and schizophrenia isn't taken into account? or is mental illness only an alibi for white mass murderers

Some white folks have white on the brain to a bizarre and astonishing degree. It's as if they feel like the world would be much better place if all white people killed themselves. I find it disturbing.
