That is really a powerful earthquake. The news says the last time something that strong hit Peru was 12 years ago. This earthquake occurred at a depth of over 100 kilometers below the surface and the fact that it struck a fairly unpopulated area will reduce the fatality and damage toll.

I don't think the size of the quake is too surprising with it being on the ring of fire. But that still must be really scary for anyone there. It's kind of amazing that only one person died given the size.
