I just bought a pair last month. 
They make sense because a women's waist is typically above her belly button, while with men a thin waist normally falls below the belly button.

I really hope that the man who wrote those comments is single and stays that way, at least until he learns to act like a dedent human being. Someone like that isn't suitable for a relationship.
Ah, so that's why I'm single! But wait, I make the first move often, too. Is there also a rule that says not to answer to passes made by women with glasses?
Eh, I've only ever worn high waist jeans; low waist ones are just too uncomfortable to use. My sister, on the other hand, thinks exactly the opposite. It's not always about the fashion; sometimes it's about what feels better.

When she made the quip back in the Forties or Fifties she was addressing women- who were desperate to attract husbands. Not men.
And you're misquoting it .
The word "real" wasn't there. She wasn't instructing men on how to be gentlemen. Etiguette had nothing to do with it. She was instructing other women how to be hawt. Her point was that wearing glasses made females look plain, so hey should get contacts, or whatever.
I don't particularly agree with the statement. Sarah Palin and Tina Fey both wear glasses, and both look hot to me. But I grew up in later era when, I suppose, lady's glasses look more stylish than they once did.
But the point is ...approaching ladies may, or may not, be "gentlemanly" in particular circumstances. But it doesn't matter if the lady is wearing glasses or not.

My comment was not mean't to belittle Dorothy Parker, It was rather a silly attempt to ridicule/satire the criticism against the news-reporter's attire. The lady in question is (in my view) conservatively dressed and her spectacles make her appear like a school "Mam" or librarian...hardly worth the outcry
