The State Medical Board of Ohio has ruled against the use of medical cannabis by anxiety and autism spectrum disorder patients. After the decision, regulators left the meeting feeling dissatisfied, terming the move as shameful.

A committee made up of members of the board stated that physicians had given them a reason to believe that cannabis could be harmful. According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Dr. Anup Patel, several double-blind, placebo-controlled cannabis studies.

However, recreational use of cannabis has been found to heighten the risk of suffering psychotic illness. The younger a subject is when they begin using, the higher the chances of developing psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia.

That schizophrenia theory is flawed....they never actually determined if it was correlation or causation. Also, though have they ever heard of CBD?

Sure I would not say getting autistic children 'high' on marijuana would be a good way to combat their anxiety but I fully support the idea of using CBD...that's the calming part without the high. And I agree with the regulars who called the move shameful.

I can't really speak for all autistics but I can't smoke pot and I live in a state where marijuana is legal.
It gives me a racing heartbeat and extreme panic.

I personally get a real negative reaction from it,I would not recommend it for treatment of autism related anxiety. For me it makes anxiety worse but thats just me other people may react differently to marijuana.

THC can make some people anxious....but I think the CBD specifically could be useful for anxiety, I mean arguably CBD helps mellow out the marijauna. I like to smoke it, but I have to admit I certainly have been more recently looking for strains with less THC. Seems with the recreational marijuana market they're just pushing for the highest THC and that's a little annoying I mean I just want something mellow to relax with. So hopefully that trend will change.

This research body has made a fairly convincing link between cannabis use in adolescence and psychosis/schizophrenia in about a fifth of the adolescent population. They have recommended since that NO-ONE under 20 should use cannabis, because of the danger of its effects on vulnerable young brains, and there is no way of differentiating the ones who will be more vulnerable to adverse effects of using THC products.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC135493/

They have studied the same large group of people from birth for years, and their findings are considered to be cutting edge because of the robust methodology and quality of their work (which is ongoing).

Excerpt:

Using cannabis in adolescence increases the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia in adulthood. Our findings agree with those of the Swedish study1 and add three new pieces of evidence. Firstly, cannabis use is associated with an increased risk of experiencing schizophrenia symptoms, even after psychotic symptoms preceding the onset of cannabis use are controlled for, indicating that cannabis use is not secondary to a pre-existing psychosis. Secondly, early cannabis use (by age 15) confers greater risk for schizophrenia outcomes than later cannabis use (by age 18). The youngest cannabis users may be most at risk because their cannabis use becomes longstanding.5 Thirdly, risk was specific to cannabis use, as opposed to use of other drugs, and early cannabis use did not predict later depression. Our findings now require replication in large population studies with detailed measures of cannabis use and schizophrenia.

Although most young people use cannabis in adolescence without harm, a vulnerable minority experience harmful outcomes. A tenth of the cannabis users by age 15 in our sample (3/29) developed schizophreniform disorder by age 26 compared with 3% of the remaining cohort (22/730). Our findings suggest that cannabis use among psychologically vulnerable adolescents should be strongly discouraged by parents, teachers, and health practitioners. Policy makers and law makers should concentrate on delaying onset of cannabis use.

When I was younger I was at a party and there was a guy there who flipped out and stated acting crazy and was sent to a psychiatric hospital. The police thought that someone dosed him with LSD and everyone at the party was interviewed by detectives. His tests came back negative for LSD and it turned out he smoked some very high grade marijuana and suffered a psychotic episode.

Pot can cause psychotic episodes in young people for sure,I have seen it happen

If you smoke too much THC without a tolerance and without sufficient CBD yeah that can happen . Simply add some high CBD strain in with the weed you plan to smoke and start small and go slow and you will not have this problem.
