There are some announced challengers to Trump within the Republican Party. Two are Massachusetts governor William Weld and talk-show host and former House member Joe Walsh (not the Eagles dude, bro  ).
Within-party challenges to incumbents used to be more common in the Sixties and Seventies, but since Teddy Kennedy's challenge to Jimmy Carter in 1980, they have been rare. What effect, if any, might these Republican challengers have on the 2020 election :??

I am sure Trump will get into a twitter storm with these people but unless there is some sort of collapse or if one of these challengers runs as a third party candidate probably not much.

Bill Weld is a “Rockefeller Republican”, economic conservative (though not opposed to government intervention when necessary, very socially progressive.

Joe Walsh is a hard-right, Tea Party-type.

No sitting President in recent times who has been challenged from within his own party for the nomination has ever won reelection. Jimmy Carter had been challenged by Ted Kennedy, and George Bush was challenged by Pat Buchanan, and both lost. An internal challenge shows how there is irreparable division within the party ranks. I think Trump is going to be a one term President.

...Former SC governor Mark Sandford is thinking about it - maybe he will think about it in a hike in the Appalachians :P !

...Yeah, and looking this up I saw that Gerald Ford (with the additional disadvantage of being a literally unelected President post-a national trauma) received a strong challenge from a certain Ronald Reagan.

Me too. Though with George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot was also a factor.

Yes, new taxes and recession were the main factors.

How well known are Weld and Walsh compared to Kennedy and Buchanan?

...Lesd, I'd grant. Walsh was a one-term House member noted then. and in his rafio-show says, for some rather extreme statements he's apologizing for now ' Je'd kind of a Trump-style Republican who is turned off now by DJT'd more weird and f_____-up statements. Wrld was governor of Massachusetts, but it seems like, in the 21st, being popular in Massachusetts turns off the rest of the country  ! John Kerry AND Mitt Romney  - so. look out for Lizzie W. :P 8) ?
I suppose Weld might be seen by some as a RINO, too :x :? .

Caveat should be a serious challenge. Obama had some no-name opponent in 2012 that got on the ballot in like 1 state.
