I do not know this soldier or his autistic son. I barely know his wife, who suffers from MS. (She was an infant when I moved to Chicago in 1986, and was barely 5 years old when I left Chicago in 1991.) I do know his father-in-law, as he was president of the library automation firm I worked for from 1986-1991 (he hired me straight out of grad school). Last time I talked to her father was 3 years ago, shortly after retired as CEO of the software company’s parent organization. I called him while he, his wife and eldest daughter were out for dinner celebrating his 65th birthday. He didn’t recognize me until I dropped the hint of the only lyric tenor he employed from Central PA.

Those that can afford it, it might be a good idea to make a contribution to any of the organizations listed in the above-linked report.
