Google has teamed up with one of the largest health care systems in the U.S. to gather the personal health care information of millions of people in 21 states, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Named “Project Nightingale,” the initiative is one of the largest efforts by Silicon Valley tech companies to enter the lucrative health care industry. Google partnered last year with Ascension, the St. Louis-based health care system that is the second largest in the U.S., to collect and crunch health care data on a massive scale.

Patients and doctors have not been notified that their data is being shared.

Amazon, Apple and Microsoft are also aggressively pushing into health care, though they haven’t yet struck deals of this scope.

Would you trust Google with your personal health information?

Positives:

-Data analytics will make it easier to find errors, fraud, misdiagnosis, bad doctors, wrong prescriptions ... any data abnormality.

-Easily accessible medical records. No more calling your old doctor, "please forward my records to new doctor".

-May force standardization of medical reporting.

Negatives:
-Likely data will be breeched by other people, so you will lose some privacy.

-Likely your data will be used to sell you stuff.

-Possibly, your data is more easily used against you. Like on gun background checks, employment background medical checks, insurance background checks, divorce /child custody fights, lawsuits ...

-Likely, bad medical incidents are permanently on your record.

Google and privacy are contradictory, they are not interested in my health, I'm merely a product to be monetized.

A federal regulator has opened an inquiry into Google and Ascension’s ‘Project Nightingale’ amassing the detailed health information of millions of patients.
The Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services “will seek to learn more information about this mass collection of individuals’ medical records to ensure that HIPAA protections were fully implemented,” office director Roger Severino said in a statement ....

Down the line, experts say, Google could reap tens of millions of dollars or more by repeating its Ascension work for other health-care clients.

A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on the HHS inquiry.
