Car drives into Seattle protest; driver jumps out and brandishes weapon
Quote:
A car sped into protesters on Sunday evening in Seattle on Capitol Hill, just before 9 p.m.
One man, a 27-year-old who identified himself as Daniel, was injured, but no one else. It is unclear as of this writing if he was shot, or hurt after he launched himself into the speeding vehicle, managing to get himself partly in through the driver's side window.
The car then slowed down, and came to a stop.
“My whole thing was to protect those people,” Daniel told Alex Garland, a photographer. Garland posted a video of a brief interview with Daniel to Twitter.
The driver, who appeared to be white and in his 30s, got out of the car brandishing a weapon. Witnesses believed it was a Taser gun, which stuns people with electric nodes, but Seattle police said on Twitter that it was a gun.
The driver is now in custody, according to Seattle Police. The gun has been recovered.
Ryan Teed, a medic, described seeing the driver step out of the car, holding a weapon.
“He waved it, pointed it at everyone, myself included, ran into the crowd,” Teed said.
“It looked like the crowd sorta got him, and turned him over to the police. There was an injury on the ground here. It looked to me like he was hit by a car. Right shoulder injury. Medics surrounded that guy, treated him, and then we marched him, clearing the street, to the next intersection.
“We got there just as an ambulance was pulling in, and he got in with his fist in the air.
“He was okay.”
Garland, the photographer, described what he observed on Twitter: “With the help of other medics I got a tourniquet on his arm. Street medics were on the spot with gauze and pressure.”
Daniel was transported to Harborview by Seattle Fire.

Angry driver plows SUV into crowd of Brooklyn George Floyd protesters, is arrested

A hotheaded driver was arrested after he was caught on video driving his SUV into a crowd of George Floyd protesters in Brooklyn, cops said Sunday.
Startling video shows the angry driver, Jacob Leiper, 44, of Astoria, Queens, hop a curb and plow his 2020 Volkswagon SUV into a crowd on the corner of St Johns Place. and Brooklyn Ave. in Crown Heights around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, cops said.
He sped off after allegedly striking a bicyclist and several other demonstrators, authorities said.
Protestors yelled “Watch out” as the car surged through the group, running over the cyclist while people tried to jump on top of the car to stop it, video shows.
Police arrested Leiper after protesters pointed out his car, according to cops.
The 24-year-old cyclist struck by Leiper was transported to King’s County Hospital for an injured ankle, cops said. A few other protesters were hurt but refused medical attention, police said.
Leiper is listed on LinkedIn as working for New York’s Health and Hospitals Corporation. A spokesperson for the hospitals said, “We will cooperate with law enforcement as needed.”
Leiper was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of marijuana and leaving the scene of an accident.
A friend who often skateboards with Leiper described him as “cool person" who works in the boiler room of a Brooklyn hospital.
