They had a ten year civil war between Papua New Guinea and the island of Bougainville, and apparently it didn't get much attention in the US news.
Fifteen thousand Bouganville islanders died in the war. That's probably more than either Israel or Palestine has lost in the Gaza fighting. And relative to the island's population of 238,000 its about three times the death toll of the United States in its Civil War.
Plus Bouganville and PNG aren’t far from East Timor, where they were at war w/ Indonesia for decades before regaining independence.
The Sudan Civil War lasted nearly 30 years before South Sudan became independent.
