If it holds up like leather, I think it's a great idea.

Interesting, I noticed they mention breathability, I hope it's resilient too. Because fake leather might look more or less like the real thing, but it has none of its qualities. A well-made item of quality leather can last you a life-time.

I also think this is a great idea in part because if this concept catches on, fashion products that are made from plants could become more mainstream.

However, longevity I think is key to this catching on in the world of fashion.

A lot of fabrics are already made from plants: cotton, linen, viscose etc.

These days, they seem to aim for "let's make you buy a new wardrobe every year", but there are still people around who will opt for resilience. Comfort is also a factor: fake leather doesn't keep you warm or protect you properly from wind and rain but it makes you sweat like crazy...

What I actually meant was leather being made from plants given that many fabrics are indeed made from plants like the ones you mentioned.

One of the biggest uses of leather is in shoes and boots. That would be its best test. Can they make a long lasting and efficient engineer / construction worker / military boots? My guess is it's more like they can make faux leather fashion jackets.
