THE COUNTESS AND THE GYPSY

ALL old towns have local legends which are handed down from generation to generation until in time they become accepted as factual and Maybole is no different from other towns in this respect. Every Minnieboler is reared to believe that the King of the Gypsies eloped with a Countess of Cassillis and after the enraged Earl caught up with the elopers he hanged the gypsy and his followers on the Dule Tree at Cassillis and imprisoned his errant spouse in the old castle at the foot of the High Street for the rest of her life and the room with the oriel window facing up the street is pointed out to this day as the "Countess’s Room".

John Kennedy 6th Earl of Cassilis, hereditary clan chief of the Kennedys.

Must be it

Never a good idea to tick off a Gypsy.

Quote:
The core of the song's story is that a lady forsakes a life of luxury to run off with a band of gypsies. In some versions there is one individual, named, for example as Johnny Faa or Black Jack Davy. In some versions there is one leader and his six brothers. In one local tradition, the lady is identified as the wife of the Earl of Cassilis. In some versions the gypsies charm her with their singing, or even cast a spell over her. In a typical version, the lord comes home to find his lady "gone with the gypsy laddie". He saddles his fastest horse to follow her. He finds her and bids her come home, asking "Would you forsake your husband and child?" She refuses to return: in many versions preferring the cold ground ("What care I for your fine feather sheets?") and the gypsy's company to her lord's wealth and fine bed. At the end of some versions the husband kills the gypsies. In the local Cassilis tradition, they are hanged on the Cassilis Dule Tree.

Authorities recover body of Maeve Kennedy McKean, search for missing son continues

Quote:
The body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean was recovered by authorities Monday after she and her son disappeared on a canoe in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay on Friday, officials said.

McKean, 40, the grand-niece of President John F. Kennedy was found at about 5:30 p.m. submerged 25 feet below the bay’s surface about 2.5 miles south of her mom’s Shady Side home, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.

The search for McKean’s 8-year-old son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, will resume tomorrow, authorities said.

We had clear skies, but had thirty mph winds on about that date, here in the Washington suburbs fifty miles inland from the bay. So they probably had the same weather patterns. Strong westerlies kicking in just as they got into the canoe that pushed them away from the shore. Used to make many work related drives out to the Ann Arundel county shore around Deale and Annapolis. Drove past ritzy properties on the shore like their home, and not far from their home. The bay seems harmless, but the sea is cruel and treacherous. It wasn't even the open bay(just a bay of the bay)much less the open Atlantic, but apparently even a branch OF a branch of the Ocean can be treacherous like that.
