http://nypost.com/2020/04/17/el-chapos- ... us-relief/

Pros and cons to this.. as mentioned in the article. Like, at least people are getting something from someone vs nothing from anyone, but obvi like countless other drug lords throughout history this is a PR campaign to curry favour with the locals.

Perhaps it’s a bit of a necessary evil.

I’m sure the locals feel similarly.. trapped into being under cartel control and having to support them, but also genuinely grateful for their assistance.

I’d probably feel about the same if the only aid I could get was from our local organized crime groups. Thing is, though, many of these career criminals do genuinely have a heart and do sincerely enjoy being charitable. Our local example is the Hell’s Angels annual participation in the motorcycle Toy Run showing up in large numbers to donate toys for kids at Christmas time. Yes, it’s an image thing, But these guys also care about kids and do this with sincerity and the public knows both.

I would gladly accept aid packages from criminals than no one at all if I needed it.

Also, this is being done by the clothing & alcohol brand “El Chapo 701,” which is an entirely legal business. (Lol) So everything is above board!

Heh. Must be illegal for them to sell their brand here or you’d think gangsta types would wanna flaunt it.

That’s how drug cartels recruit kids. They trap them by providing them with much-needed items.

Lol doubtful. Looks like they come with tequila, though!

Also, as per a Mexican guy I chatted with here, apparently “narco culture’s,” drug of choice is meth. Cheap, plentiful, socially acceptable amongst the youth in that crowd etc.

Yes. But it’s also how they capture the hearts and minds of entire communities - by providing everything the local government cannot. Schoolhouses, clinics, running water etc some places on this Earth have been run by drug lords for generations and the local people revere them because they have been provided for.

Of course it does lol they’re massive organized crime groups that have grown very wealthy and powerful vis the drug trade.

BUT, if you were someone in a poor region of Mexico and the only source of aid was from a cartel, would you not accept their gift? Like accept their soap and food or get sick and die.. I’d accept their aid package.

Besides, it’s not as if these people are any More under their control because of it. The situation is already such that if they want you to work for them, you either do it or they kill you.

It would be nice, seriously, if the conditions which enable these cartels to thrive and recruit new members could be mitigated, somehow.

You know what the conditions are that enable this crap?

Drug prohibition.

Hundreds of years of recorded history have proven that humans use recreational drugs. In fact, after energy and food, illicit drugs are the largest traded commodity in the world. People haven’t stopped spending their money on them just because they’re illegal.

The solution is ending prohibition of drugs and creating legal regulated markets, cutting the black market completely out of the loop.

BUT, it won’t happen Because there are far too many people who make far too much money due to drug prohibition who don’t want the music to stop. Obviously cartels are among the biggest windfall winners. But then there’s law enforcement, the justice system, and the prison system that all derive their livelihoods from it’s perpetuation. Etc.

Attitudes are shifting in many ways so maybe I’m wrong to say it will Never happen, but those are the rea$on$ change is glacially slow.

Plus the politicians who serve the true will of the people and legislate these changes would have little red laser sight dots on their foreheads before the ink was dry on their signatures if they ever dared do it. Money is power. Cartels have it and will kill (more) to keep it.

I doubt that would happen with the “hard” drugs.

I am sort of on the fence as to whether I feel legalization of “hard” drugs would be good and proper.

It's funny how mafia seems to fill the vacuum left by the state.
They are sometimes quite equal competitors.

IMO it’s the endgame solution. Portugal decriminalized all drugs over a decade ago and has had great success - fewer people use drugs, too.

Thanks to C-19 we’re as close as we’ve ever been to making such a move here. With the world shut down, smuggling routes are closed and the infamous DTES was running out of drugs - mainly opiates, but probably everything. But I think opiates were the main concern. Anyways, city officials knew there would only be a few days supply of drugs left before the complete mayhem of thousands of people detoxing at once would happen so they got the federal government on board to green light some sort of safe supply agreement. Now they’re supply addicts with drugs. Probably a synthetic like suboxone, maybe methodone.

Either way, we’re giving addicts a safe supply of drugs right now and it’s very highly probable that someone is not only monitoring, but studying this right now.. they’ll have a record or everything from overdoses and deaths to property crimes and hospital visits. If the numbers come back and say that “Hey, wait a minute, it costs less money for taxpayers and is better for society and healthier for the addict to cut the street dealers out of the loop and guarantee a safe drug supply,” then this pilot program might be the first in Canada that will help move things towards a decriminalized or legalized drug distribution model.
