Baku,Azerbaijan( REUTERS)

Seven Azeri soldiers and a civilian, and two Armenian servicemen were killed today in a third day of border clashes between countries that fought a war in the 90's over the mountains of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The international community worries about fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan because it threatens stability in the south Caucasus,a region rich in oil and natural gas.

Fighting started sunday with both nations accusing the other of breaking the cease fire.Armenia and Azerbaijan, two former Soviet socialist republics have long been fighting over the mainly Armenian ethnic region of Nagorno-Karabakh.But this latest fighting occurred around Tavush region in northeast Armenia.

Russia has urged both sides to show restraint.

Norgorno-Karabakh is in Azerbaijan but is ethnically Armenian, though a cease fire agreed in 1994 the two nations continue to accuse each other of violating the cease fire.

Hmmm... Never noticed that. That the mountain range in southern Russia is spelled the same way as the plural of "caucus" which in American political term that the Founding Fathers coined, but they didnt coin it because they got the term from the American Indians (meaning "political conference").

But have long been aware that one of the former Soviet Republics that make up the "Caucuses" region has the same name as an American state:Georgia.

I'm a spelling nightmare,I misspelled it I think central Asia is Caucases not Caucuses.I think the two Georgia's are named after different Georges, our state is after George the II of England,I would maybe a Russian George for the country or maybe a Saint in eastern orthodoxy.

I researched and the country Georgia is named after a Roman soldier and early christian martyr named George around the time of Constantine.Georgians call themselves Katveli and Georgia Sakartveli

That's my understand:that the former Soviet Georgia is indeed named after "St. George", who is the same person as the Roman soldier who was canonized. A guy in Roman ruled Syria who joined the Roman army, and became canonized as a saint in both the Catholic and eastern orthodox churches. And who got mythologized into the knight who killed that dragon, and whose cross represents England on the Union Jack of the United Kingdom. As opposed to the X shaped cross of St. Andrew that represents Scotland- on that flag.

And the American state is named after one of the King Georges of England. You might be right that its no. 2.

And it IS "Caucasus Mountains" and the "Iowa Caucuses". Not quite spelled the same way.
