An image of controversial 18th-century missionary Junipero Serra may be removed from the Ventura County seal as one element of a planned redesign of the emblem. At Tuesday's (July 21, 2020) county Board of Supervisors meeting, the county's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force will give an update on the planned redesign of the seal.
Serra was a Spanish priest who founded a mission in Ventura but who also abused and enslaved Native Americans to do so. The image of Serra is the largest one on the seal.
