Denmark plans to kill up to 17 million farmed mink due to coronavirus mutation

The coronavirus can be transmitted between animals an humans and back again. Minks are one of the vulnerable animals. Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur in the world

“We have been informed by Denmark of a number of persons infected with coronavirus from mink, with some genetic changes in the virus,” the WHO told Reuters. “The Danish authorities are investigating the epidemiological and virological significance of these findings.” Outbreaks have persisted in farms across the country since the pandemic started. “The worst-case scenario is a new pandemic, starting all over again out of Denmark,” Kare Molbak, director at the State Serum Institute, said, according to Reuters.

Zombie Minks

Minks infected with a mutated strain of the novel coronavirus appeared to rise from the grave this week after thousands were culled in Denmark earlier in the month.

Parliament ordered around 15 million mink to be killed and all mink farming is banned until the end of next year. The country is the world's largest exporter of mink fur. However, in the haste to dispose of the bodies, Danish authorities reported Thursday that some of the carcasses had risen to the surface of their makeshift graves after gases built up inside the decomposing bodies.

Why are people so stupid to kill all those lovely animals. Viruses peter out on their own accord once they have effected the population and have no one left to carry on as everyone has developed antibodies...

Why all this destruction. Do we cull humans now incase they get the virus and could die of it?

Why is this world so crazy and so slow to catch on to the fact that the more we try to slow the virus, the longer we will have it. All viruses are like that.

So even if the virus just peters out in the human population it wouldnt in the mink population -so it would just vector back into humans from the minks.

It is a shame about the mink but, given that COVID-19 affects both humans and mink, I could see how it could be a big problem in a mink "farm".

What I have not heard is why the heck social distancing was not effective at the Bronx Zoo.
