Gloria Estefan reveals she had COVID after dining outdoors at Florida restaurant
Quote:
Gloria Estefan revealed this week that she was diagnosed with COVID-19 last month despite strictly following health protocols and rarely leaving her Florida home.
The Grammy-winning singer, who experienced only mild symptoms and has already recovered, said in a video posted Tuesday on Instagram that she tested positive days after dining outdoors with her family at a Miami-area restaurant.
“The reason I’m sharing this is because I want you to know how highly contagious this is,” she told her followers before urging them to take precautions and try to protect themselves from the virus.
Estefan, 63, believes she may have been exposed by a maskless fan who approached her table that night to talk to her.
The Cuban-born star learned she was infected when she lost her sense of smell and taste a few days later and began “freaking out.” She tested positive on Nov. 8 but only had “a little bit of cough” before fully recovering.
Estefan said she spent two weeks in total isolation on the second floor of her home and recently tested negative twice. She added that fear was her biggest challenge since she didn’t know how serious her symptoms would get.
“The doctor said that maybe I got a very low viral dose, which may be why the symptoms were like that, not so difficult,” Estefan said, noting that her strong immune system likely helped her fight the disease.
The “Conga” singer rose to fame with the group Miami Sound Machine in the 1970s and now owns several businesses with her husband, including Cuban-themed restaurants and a Miami Beach hotel.
