ABC facing backlash for 'Invasion Day' promotion

Broadcasting network the ABC has faced heavy backlash for promoting big ticket “Australia Day/Invasion Day events” in an online article and on Twitter – including a planned Sydney Invasion Day rally set to go ahead at the Domain.

New South Wales Police Minister David Elliott slammed the taxpayer-funded network for the advertisement, saying it was shockingly irresponsible for them to promote an event which could potentially breach COVID-19 health measures.

An ABC spokeswoman, however, hit back in a Daily Telegraph article saying they were just reporting on events slated for the day.

No. It’s pointless window dressing. A curtain that simply works to conceal the real problems indigenous Australian face by giving a superficial matter centre stage under a bright spotlight; while in the wings, women and children continue to be molested, battered and killed.

Nor will making such a change appease the aggrieved and offended minority whose goal is seemingly not to solve our most critical problems or attain unity, but to spark and maintain division.

Australia Day on 26 January is the day for celebrating the nation, like the US 4 July.
The issue is that it is the day when the British arrived and claimed sovereignty, which obviously from an indigenous point of view is a controversial reason to celebrate.
They keep talking of changing the date... which might be a start, but I'm not sure the date alone is really the issue.

For the record, personally, I don't have a problem with changing the 'Australia Day' date.
If the 26th is upsetting to some of the Aboriginal community, I am happy to acknowledge this and make a compromise.
No big deal for me.

I actually sympathise with the sadness of the Aboriginal community about the beginning of European domination, as I sympathise with the sadness of the Native Americans when their country was overtaken.

But maintaining the hate, rather than embracing opportunities for improvement, is self-destructive.

Australia Day Jan 26th Saw record numbers of neo-Nazis "invading" the Grampians and scaring locals and tourists in my local state of Victoria. I am crossing this place of my list of places to visit during Australia day holidays.
