Arkansas governor signs transgender sports ban

Quote:
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) on Thursday signed a law that will ban transgender girls and women from participating in K-12 and collegiate level sports that align with their gender identity.

Hutchinson's approval comes despite criticism from child-welfare and medical groups that argued the law would negatively affect transgender youth. It also makes Arkansas the second state to approve a transgender sports ban this year, according to The Associated Press.

“This law simply says that female athletes should not have to compete in a sport against a student of the male sex when the sport is designed for women’s competition,” Hutchinson wrote in a press release. “As I have stated previously, I agree with the intention of this law. This will help promote and maintain fairness in women’s sporting events.”

Nearly 20 state legislatures have pushed for similar bans led by Republicans this year, the AP noted. Earlier this month Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) signed a bill prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports in public schools.

Earlier this week Hutchinson acknowledged that he did not want the law to result in transgender people and the LGBT community being targeted, according to the news outlet. He also stated that he hoped to enact a hate crimes law to show his support for the community.

Arkansas governor signs law that lets doctors refuse service based on religious beliefs
Quote:
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) signed a bill into law Friday that allows medical doctors to decline to treat patients if their belief systems don't align with the service being provided.

SB289, The Medical Ethics and Diversity Act, grants doctors the right to refuse treatment based on religious or moral objections.

The measure, which will go into effect this summer, stipulates that health care workers and institutions can choose not to provide certain treatments to patients only in nonemergency situations.

Hutchinson rejected a similar measure in 2017. A statement released by Hutchinson's office stated that he signed this new measure because it limited health care providers' right to deny to certain health care services, not people.

"The bill was changed to ensure that the exercise of the right of conscience is limited to 'conscience-based objections to a particular health care service,' " Hutchinson said in the statement.

So... Now trans men who are on testosterone will be forced to compete with cis women instead of cis men, because they were born female...

This really fixes their "concerns" and shows how much thought they put into this.

It'd be a real shame if medical professionals suddenly realized that helping Republican politicians was against their religion. You'd see those same Republican politicians change their tune on religious freedom real quickly.

Asa graduated from Bob Jones University.

That should tell you everything about him.

That's not the concern. The real concern is this open attack on women and girls. Modern "wokeism" and political correctness is so incredibly out of control that we are now supposed to accept this open attack on all females.

Maybe we should simply get rid of all genders in sports and allowing everyone to compete equally against each other without any gender divisions whatsoever.

There are plenty of sports where people do compete together regardless of gender.

This is clearly just discrimination against LGBTQ people. There is no "attack on women and girls" here, just trans women trying to live their lives. While not explicitly mentioned here, this argument always just makes me think of intersex people. Caster Semenya is the most well-known example; she was assigned female at birth and identifies female, so she is pretty undeniably a woman. However, she is also intersex and has elevated testosterone levels, which apparently gives her an advantage over most women. Biology, including biological sex, is not as simple as people think it is, so it's hardly as if every cis woman has a level playing field.

The religious medical exemption one makes me more concerned though. Banning people from sports is mean, but hardly life or death. Medicine very frequently is life and death. If certain doctors say it's against their religion to do parts of their job, they should get a different job. While this one doesn't look as bad as it could be, I just don't think religious health-care exemptions should ever exist.

Caster Semenya's case is different and incredibly rare. It's based on science and is relevant but it shouldn't be a justification for allowing biologically male athletes to totally destroy women's sports.

Again, if that's what we want, let's get rid of all gender division in sports.
