Quote:
Anti-Semitism in Britain: Tuvia Tenenbom’s ‘The Taming of the Jew’.

Tuvia Tenenbom, now in his mid-60s, is a phenomenon. Born in Israel, he lives in Germany and the United States. He is a theatre director, playwright, author, journalist and the founding artistic director of the Jewish Theater of New York. But he is best known for his irreverent, topical and hugely opinionated books including, recently, Catch the Jew! (2014), The Lies they Tell (2016), Hello, Refugees! (2017) and now, The Taming of the Jew: A Journey Through the United Kingdom (Gefen Publishing House, available on Amazon at £15.59). He deserves to be better known here and The Taming of the Jew is a perfect place to start.

Tenenbom is perhaps best described as an Israeli version of Michael Moore or Borat, someone who goes around, meets people, takes on hugely controversial subjects and gets them to open up in the way more conventional journalists don’t manage to. All those exclamation marks in the titles gives you a good sense of Tenenbom’s style.

Interesting that flying a Palestinian flag or sympathising in any way with the Palestinian cause is automatically taken as anti-Semitism.

The Irish and the Scots in particular, but also the Welsh to a lesser degree, identify with the ongoing Israeli / Palestinian crisis because in the past their relationship with England was almost as bad. It's solidarity amongst past and present underdogs and victims. While I'm sure in some cases there is underlying anti-Semitism AS WELL, in many cases there won't be. Lumping the two things together without thought or analysis is ridiculous.

As far as the English are concerned, we're in a state of post-colonial hangover. Waking up, looking back through the history book, going "Ah, did we really do that? Oh my head". Which makes other people making the same stupid mistakes really frustrating.

The sad thing is, there's probably a lot the author could have learned from the Northern Irish peace process, which wasn't that long ago. But in order to do that, he would first of all need to lose the persecution complex and come to understand that Israel is more bully than victim these days. And that alternative points of view are NOT inherently racist, and can indeed be essential in brokering peace.

The lack of self-awareness in this would be funny if it weren't so tragic. Brits are "living in denial" eh? No, I think we're well aware that there's anti-Semitism in some sections of society. But we're also aware that it's possible to disagree with a country's political and military actions without hating individuals from that country, their culture, their religion or indeed anything else about them. Knowing the difference is a key part of being an adult.

The irony in this article is off the f*****g scale.

Being critical of the PRC doesn't mean you hate Chinese people.
Being critical of Iran doesn't mean you hate Iranians
Being critical of Saudi Arabia doesn't mean you hate Muslims.
Being critical of Brazil doesn't mean you hate Brazilians.
Being critical of apartheid-era South Africa doesn't mean you hate Afrikaners.
Being critical of Turkey doesn't mean you hate Turks.
Being critical of Russia doesn't mean you hate Russians.

So how does being critical of Israel mean you hate Jews?

Wow, a sensible and smart person who actually understands that criticizing a country founded upon settler colonialism, genocide, racism and militarism doesn't mean you hate the ethnic group that the nation purports to represent, disingenuously too. I never I'd never find sensibility on this forum that once labeled me anti-Semitic just for criticizing Israel for bombing a Gazan hospital.

thank you, someone gets it. If criticizing Israel makes one an anti-Semite then call me the biggest anti-semite on the planet.

I criticize ISIS all the time, doesn't mean I hate Muslims. finally someone gets it

Honestly this entire post is one giant massive joke that reeks of Zionist victim complex. Oh noes, people on earth are learning to wake up and rightfully censure Israel as the tyrannical, racist, terrorist pariah state that it is?? Let's just smack the good ol anti-Semitism canard on them and forever deem them a bunch of deplorable Jew haters. What's that you say, there are millions of Jews who also criticize Israel, Jews such as the Holocaust survivors who condemned Israel's bombing of Gaza in 2014:

https://www.haaretz.com/holocaust-survi ... -1.5260588

academics like Noam Chomsky, Norman Finklestein, Israeli historians like Illan Pepe, former Israeli IDF soldiers such as the organization "Breaking the Silence", Orthodox Jewish organizations such as the Neuterai Karta, and other Jewish organizations such as "Jewish Voices for Peace" - there are all these Jews who also criticize Israel? Nah, they're not REAL Jews, they're self hating Jews.

Man, the lengths to which Zionists go to defend evil is laughably insane. If criticizing Israel makes one Anti-Semitic because many anti-Semites criticize Israel and Israel calls it the jewish state, then Frick it I hereby declare all enemies or critics of ISIS to be Islamphobes - after all Islamaphobes genuinely criticize ISIS and ISIS is the ISLAMIC state.

This has gotten absurd. I'm all for calling anti-Semitism denying the Holocaust, thinking Jews have dual loyalties, that Jews are greedy money lenders, or using actual anti-Semitic tropes, that I can easily call anti-Semitism. But for this Zionist pig to honestly make protesting for Palestine or basic criticism of Israel into an anti-Semitic indictment is just stupid and hypocritical.

Not everyone has that privilege. Some people, i.e. Palestinians like me, have had our lives turned to hell by the Israeli government and get rightfully pissed when some hypocritical Zionist calls it anti-Semitic to simply stand for people being oppressed. Imagine the audacity of this clown trying to make the Irish seem like anti-Semites just for standing up for Palestinian human rights; imagine how ugly this world is where Israel can bomb civilian centers, detain and torture children as young as 5 in the West Bank, build illegal settlements on Palestinian land, demolish over 69,000 Palestinian homes since 1967, violate over 96 UN resolutions, commit multiple war crimes in multiple attacks on the Gaza Strip that have left thousands dead and many thousands orphaned, widowed and suffering severe PTSD, and to add insult to injury act as the victim, and then I'm supposed to stay calm seeing someone turn rightful criticism of Israel into some anti-Semitic crime. I've actually lost uncles to Israel's terrorism, had cousins killed in Gaza including a 6 month old baby by Israeli bombing, my dad was beaten badly as a kid by IDF soldiers, my other cousin was beaten so bad in 2006 by IDF soldiers that he has severe and permanent brain damage, I've lost a cousin to Israeli settlers killing him, and another 6 year old girl whose mom was a friend of our family is permanently paralyzed by a Jewish settler hit and run where the criminal was acquitted.

I don't care what anyone thinks, Israel will always be a vile, criminal terrorist state, and even if that comes off as extreme I've lost too much in my life to that illegal rogue state to ever back down from saying how I feel.

Even me as a little kid was almost killed by Israeli soldiers and still have PTSD ever since. I was only 6 years old when I was in Palestine and it just happened to be the Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israel. My dad was driving and all of a sudden Israeli snipers were raining bullets on the car. My dad had to drive at high speed to escape and we barely came out of it alive.

Mike sounds like some random guy who sure as hell does not speak for all of Ireland. I also feel like there are other European countries with more anti-semitism than Ireland. I hear Greece has an awful anti-semitism problem.
And many Irish probably sympathize with the Palestinians because they know what it is like to have your lands occupied, your religion denigrated, and your culture trampled on. They know what it is to live as second-class citizens.

God bless Scotland for standing up for my Palestinian brothers, and may God damn this racist anti-Arab and anti-Semitic filmmaker for supporting Israeli terrorism

The Israeli government, like all governments, absolutely loves that they can cry 'anti-semitism!' any time someone calls out their human rights abuses. It makes Palestinian genocide much easier.

If the response to the Chinese treatment of the Uighurs is any indication, it seems the best way to predict if people will think Muslims in a country deserve to be oppressed is whether or not the oppressing country is a US ally or not.

China treating Muslims like 2nd class citizens = bad
Israel treating Muslims like 2nd class citizens = good is not actually happening because suggesting that would make me antisemitic apparently!

It makes me so happy that the people on WP are finally waking up. Even though I'm currently dealing with a suicidal crisis right now, reading posts like this puts a smile on my face

But...

What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is not really "genocide".
Oppression yes. But not actual genocide. Not trying to wipe them out as a people, like the Jews under Hitler.

What the Bejing regime is doing the Uighurs really IS genocide.

It's actually a very nuanced point because the word genocide is a lot more broad, varied and multifaceted than simply trying to expunge the entire biological trace of a people through total annihilation, but also encompasses efforts of cultural expungement, effacement, and even dispossession. Israel currently is doing that by building illegal settlements that literally are forcing Palestinians to lose their land and thus their culture, having said settlers attack and destroy Palestinian farms and olive trees whose history dates from the time of Jesus and thus expunging the Palestinians of their sacred history, and other examples. Granted that seems like a stretch so maybe genocide currently isn't the right word, and im admitting as a Palestinian I dont think genocide right now is the appropriate word.

However in 1948 Israel most certainly did commit genocide. Israeli paramilitary units actually did go into Palestinian villages and wiped out men, women and children under the premise of making space for the incoming Jewish settlers to form the citizenry of Israel. Plan Dalet was actually a military protocol that the top architects of the Israeli military enshrined whose purpose was to establish transfer committees with the purpose of taking populations of Arab farmers and transferring them to another land so they can live in their place. Before a single army ever attacked Israel the Haganah and several other Israeli armed military units wiped out the village of Deir Yaseen and were wiping out more Arab villages, which is what actually prompted the 5 Arab armies to come to the aid of the Palestinians, something Zionists love to claim was an invasion when in reality it was a belated response to Israeli aggression against Arab villages

but besides what Israel did in 1948 calling what Israel's doing to Palestinians today a genocide is way too much a stretch, and this is coming from someone whose lost family members to Israel

So fare Pepe this has been the only snippet in the article that actually contained bona fide anti-Semitism, not "oh noes Israel is being criticized for being an international pariah, waaaaah"
