Donald Trump booed at Alabama rally after telling supporters to 'take the vaccines'

Former President Donald Trump was briefly booed at a rally on Saturday in Alabama after telling his supporters they should get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Trump, who held a rally in Cullman, about 50 miles north of Birmingham, touted to rally goers that the three vaccines – Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson – were developed in under nine months during his presidency. He then suggested that they get the vaccine.

"You know what? I believe totally in your freedoms. You got to do what you have to do, but I recommend: Take the vaccines. I did it – it's good," he said.

Shortly afterward, some boos could be heard in the crowd, which was mostly maskless. Trump acknowledged the crowd's reaction and said it was OK.

"That's alright. You got your freedoms. But I happen to take the vaccine. If it doesn't work, you'll be the first to know. I'll call Alabama say, 'Hey you know what?' but it is working. But you do have your freedoms."

You are saying that Mr. Trump was disrespected by a few of his own supporters.

I am saying that it is a good start.

Remember, this is Alabama. They will bite the hand that feeds them if said hand isn’t far enough to the right.

Their (pro-Trump) governor, Kay Ivey, urged everyone to get vaxed, but her words went unheeded.

He actually handled that pretty well, or at least better than I expected him to.

Be that as it may, I was still surprised to see such a deft touch from him, as that's the way to reach his vaccine resistant followers, "that's okay, it's your choice, but I did it and I recommend it" is a hell of a lot better than the "take the jab or else" line everyone else seems to be going with.

He feels the approval and disapproval of the crowds before him. He NEEDS adulation to thrive.

What makes me sad is he tried to do something positive and in the moment handled the negative feedback well, but will probably never make such a statement again. The downplay of the virus has gotten too far down the road for him to be able to pull his stans back.

He's actually doing kind of a straddle at the moment, "vaccines are great, but it's a free country" in essence:

I'm actually a bit surprised he didn't totally back off, I generally share the sentiment that he's completely crowd driven.

It does, in some ways, come down to looking like an "own goal" from the left - They spent so much time while the vaccines were being developed (operation warp speed?) telling anyone who would listen that a vaccine wouldn't be safe, they wouldn't trust anything developed so fast (if it even could be), etc. - Then try taking credit for it as soon as Mr trump was out the door.

Who knows, maybe the "right" were listening to what the "left" were saying back then, and don't trust the sudden reversal of views on the vaccine?

Sometimes it feels like we're living not only on different continents, but different universes. While there will always be a segment of the left that is HEAVILY vaccine skeptical with high distrust of "big pharma" and all vaccines, I have no memory (which may or may not mean anything) of significant downplay coming from the left. I have a feeling the right wing news played up the small segment much more than it warranted. It wouldn't be the first time right-leaning news tried to pretend a fringe left element was more popular with the left than it is. I DO remember emphasis on just how little "warp speed" actually had to do with it all; that is the political play I was aware of (I never researched those claims myself; I stay away from that and stick to what I know: Trump was eager to secure more doses as Pfizer looked like a winner and did, in fact, do so).

The funny thing is that despite all the back and forth on vaccines, nearly everyone in my circles, regardless of politics, was eager to be vaccinated. Maybe its our age? One exception for someone I work with claiming distrust of the emergency approval; and one (rightfully, at the time, I should add) being concerned about effects on a nursing mother (I think the data is there now).
