You misunderstood what I was saying. I'm not saying Trump is "popular" among the anti-Trump people who pay attention to him. I'm saying that their disdain for him and his responses might make him even more popular among those who already like him. The anti-Trump folks also keep the spotlight on him, which can reel in otherwise indifferent folks to liking Trump in opposition to all of the haters.
So, yes, the anti-Trump folks may be a big part of why Trump is so popular (among those that support him).
