This the closest I've ever been to a tornado. A friend of mine watched it churn up stuff just north of his house.

At least 70 dead in Kentucky during record-breaking tornado disaster

Quote:
At least 70 people are dead in Kentucky after raging storms and tornados tore through the state.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced at a news conference Saturday morning that close to 100 people are presumed dead as emergency personnel continue to respond to the natural disaster.

"We are nearing the end of the most severe tornado event in Kentucky," he said, adding that it's "something we have never seen before."

Following days of warm weather, a cold front moved into the midwest, causing severe thunderstorms and tornados, Accuweather reported.

Storms hit five states — Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee — beginning late Friday night, causing extensive damage and a currently unknown death toll.

Beshear declared a state of emergency before midnight on Friday and activated 181 members of the state's National Guard. State police and emergency personnel are working around the clock to respond to the disaster.

Four tornadoes hit more than a dozen counties in Kentucky, according to the governor. More than 56,000 homes are without power.

Watching news coverage of that as I’m typing this. 70 or so killed.:(

This makes me, again, think about climate change. Wildfires in Australia and in the western United States, a derecho(100+ MPH winds)that wrecked up my home state(and led to my flight diverting all the way to St. Louis last minute), record high temps in the Pacific Northwest this past summer and now a tornado that is so deadly. What’s next?

Yeah, that was just unbelievable. The town I grew up in had a massive tornado in 1917. For years it was believed to be the longest track of a single tornado ever, but they now believe it was more than one.

We’ve always had disasters like this, and we will continue to have disasters like this. Saying this, 100 deaths is a lot for this sort of thing. And December is an odd time for this to happen. These events usually happen in early spring.

I’d be pretty concerned if a tornado touched down a couple of miles from my house. But I would feel fortunate that it wasn’t “my time.”

Yes, I feel fortunate today. I was watching this system approach and was stressed out all yesterday.

I've been through Mayfield, Ky. A couple of times. It's a charming small town. There just aren't any words.

The temperatures were unseasonably warm here for December. When a cold front hits that warm air…boom.

Here's some of the damage in my community. Nothing like Kentucky, but still devastating.

The loss of life is the worst but also the historic buildings and large trees that also get destroyed.

It is sad to see the loss of life and the great damage that they cause. Tornadoes are a “shelter in place” situation for those that have not been in one before. Being from Kansas, we are taught this at an early age. That is why most buildings and houses there have basements. Weather can get the best of you even if you plan ahead.

Unfortunately we often have fatalities from people chasing the tornadoes. You should never try to outrun one. I have before when I had no real choice, as I was at a local fair that had no protection. I should have died in that one. Most do not understand how fast one can change course and double back. I have personally seen over thirty of them, most were F0 or F1s out in farm fields that did no damage. The most at one time was five or six on the ground in rural eastern Colorado. They combined to make a much larger one. I have been under one that lifted up over my hometown and dropped down right after it passed. That one was an F2. We were very lucky that day.

The worst one I have been in was estimated to be an F3. It flat out tore up my uncle’s farm and killed most of his livestock. We were within one block of it in the farm house basement. I will remember that loud train sound for the rest of my life. I think we will see larger ones coming in the near future as the climate changes around.

If that story is true, I hope Amazon pays dearly. But that probably won't happen.
