Trudeau accuses Conservative MPs of standing with 'people who wave swastikas'

Quote:
During a heated exchange in the House of Commons Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Conservative MPs sympathetic to the trucker convoy of standing with "people who wave swastikas."

The comment came in response to a question from Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman, who is Jewish. Lantsman, the MP for the Toronto-area riding of Thornhill, said Trudeau "fans the flame of an unjustified national emergency" and asked, "When did the prime minister lose his way?"

Trudeau shot back, saying, "Conservative Party members can stand with people who wave swastikas. They can stand with people who wave the Confederate flag.

Trudeau's statement earned a rebuke from Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, who said all MPs, including the prime minister, should "use words that are not inflammatory in the House."

A small number of the assembled protesters have displayed Nazi insignia, including the swastika and yellow stars of David, while others have flown the Confederate flag during these anti-government demonstrations. These racist symbols have been condemned by MPs of all party stripes.

Lantsman, a descendant of Holocaust survivors, called Trudeau's comments "unbecoming as a prime minister."

Her colleague, Conservative MP Dane Lloyd, the grandson of a Second World War veteran, twice used his time in question period to ask Trudeau to retract his swastika remark and apologize. Trudeau ducked the questions.

Finally the overuse of Nazi comparisons called out beyond the usual rote condemnations from Jewish groups.

To put it mildly I have some problems with that protest movement. But I have not seen reporting on more than one confederate flag. As far as the swastikas Trudeau and the CBC got it wrong. Those waving around swastikas are not Nazis they are comparing Trudeau to them. Another disgusting Nazi comparison. All these Nazi comparisons no matter whose side it comes from degrade in peoples minds the unique evil of the Nazis and their latter day actual supporters.

This callout as temporary as the outrage will be is the first sliver of hope I have had in this matter in decades. This is literally a lost cause. I had no idea that any Nazi comparison could be regarded as going too far. I think Trudeau said what he said as a spur of the moment thing, not thinking at that moment that he was responding to a Jewish MP. The fact that she is Jewish put into stark view the sloppy offensiveness of cavalier comparing people to Nazis or as in this case Nazi enablers.

Wait, are white nationalists like Pat King suddenly not the organizers of Flu Trux Klan?

There are real white supremacists in the movement but most of it is people thinking mandates are the beginning of the slippery slope to Nazism or they think vaccine mandates is Nazism(SMH).

No matter what point of view you support their are going to be all sorts of people agreeing with you that you don’t want to agree with you, be they rioters, those that are using your point of view as a deflection for an agenda you despise, using your point of view for profit etc. These bad actors will be used with varying degrees of success to discredit you and by association your cause.

This always poses a conflict between standing up for your principles and wasting your time on lost cause, time that could be put to use on a cause that has a chance of success. That is a personal and circumstantial decision and usually difficult. You have to decide how important the cause is to you and make a judgement about how successfully the cause has been hijacked by evil supporters and successfully defined as a pejorative by critics.

Trudeau certainly overdid it.....very misguided statement.

He's been a Prime Minister a long time. He should know better.
