Today marks the anniversary of the first trials of the Polio vaccine.

Dr Jonas Salk announced on CBS radio that he had successfully completed tests on a polio vaccine on March 26, 1953.

The disease was a devastating one, killing thousands of people each year and leaving countless more paralysed.

Dr Salk could have made an estimated $9 billion selling his vaccine, but instead he refused to patent it, giving it away for free. An absolute man of integrity. A rare thing these days.

Just goes to show you that socialism can work. If capitalism took advantage of this vaccine, it would cost more than most life saving medicines today.
