TurboTax has repeatedly advertised its software as "free" although it's not free. They do have a free file program for low income people but they use HTML tags to block it from showing up on search engines. Technically the IRS should be creating their own free software or even better calculating how much we owe and pre filing tax returns for us but companies like TurboTax and H&R Block lobby against it by paying money to representatives of congress.

H&R Block at least has always been legitimately free when I've used it. They don't try hiding the option, but they do push their pay service while I'm using the free service. "are you sure you don't want to upgrade?"
