Heh. Approx 20min drive from where I live - right in the middle of one of the roughest neighbourhoods of this massive city. Plenty of homeless, addicts, dealers and their turf wars - but Also the new gentrified downtown city centre.
Anyways, gas must be getting too expensive.. can’t even do a drive-by anymore.

Mr Putin's war and the subsequent sanctions has blown out the cost of petrol.

You know gas prices are expensive when your weekly $100 shopping bill looks like this
I suppose I'd notice more if I were buying all my own groceries all the time.. but I'm blessed to work where we've made a habit of spending ~$1600+/mo at Costco on food to bbq lunch for all staff that are in the building (vs working remotely) pretty much every single day. Soooo, I often have 1-3 meals/day at work, which makes my personal grocery spend extremely manageable.

I do hope the Ukrainians thank all of us for carrying our share of pain to help their cause. Spare a thought for families who have already lost their jobs, many their homes, and living close to the poverty line during COVID having to now cope with yet another spike in the cost of living.

Very few of us have that luxury I'm afraid
I realize and am grateful for it.
But I could still afford to eat well on my own - even with the rising cost of food/gas, and the fact that e v e r y t h i n g where I live is EXPENSIVE.. I'm fortunate to rent a room from family for very cheap, both my vehicles are paid for, I have no debt, cash in the bank and a good paying job sooo I can weather the storm of high grocery and gas prices for a while. It simply erodes my ability to save even more money a bit, but whatever, such is life - it's a very nice first world problem to have.

I've been homeless for several months a couple times and I expect even that is better in a first world country than it is in some other places.
I’ve been right on the edge of that before, ~12 years ago or so I lived in my friend’s construction site while his house was under massive renovations for 18 months.

The Ukrainians aren't responsible for price gouging. They're just the excuse.
Whose blaming the Ukrainians? its sanctions against Russian fuel that the primary cause

Yes, I er litre of fuel prices are higher.. but everywhere that currency is used = typically more fuel efficient vehicles And way shorter driving distances since the whole island is teeny tiny compared to the vast distances one drives to get anywhere in North America or Australia.
It’s 100km round trip for me just to go to the beach and there are times I do it twice a day. Meanwhile I’ve read that it’s still extremely common that the average UK citizen never travels more than 10 miles from their birthplace throughout their entire lives.. which makes bicycles or shoes viable options vs car ownership.
