Russia stops its gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria as the two NATO nations refuse to pay Moscow in rubles

One of Russia's energy giants has ceased its gas supply to two nations who refused to pay in rubles as Ukraine accuses Moscow of "beginning the gas blackmail of Europe".

April 27, 2022

Ukraine has accused Russia of "blackmail" after one of its energy giants announced it will cut off its gas supply to two NATO countries after they refused to pay in rubles.

Russian state-owned corporation Gazprom told Poland and Bulgaria that all gas deliveries will be halted on Wednesday at 8am Central Eastern Time.

Kyiv accused Moscow of using its gas as a "weapon" as the two impacted countries revealed the supply would stop in a matter of hours.

Polish company PGNiG, the largest gas distributor in the country, said supplies through its Yamal pipeline will be cut.

But the country's Climate Minister Anna Moskwa stressed in a press conference it did not need to draw gas from its reserves which sits at 76 per cent full.

“There are no worries about shortages of gas in our homes. It is worth pointing out that liquified natural gas alone supplies the market sufficiently," she said.

Hours earlier, the Polish government announced it will impose sanctions on 50 entities and individuals, including Gazprom, as the deadly Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its 63rd day.

Yep.
It was to be expected.

It's good it's Spring, natural gas is very commonly used for heating here. Now we have several months to organize alternatives. Our reserves are said to be 80% full and we have LNG terminal in Świnoujście.

By breaking the deal on his side, Putin has made sanctions easier for us.

We used to import half of our natural gas from Russia but since Feb 24, quick alternatives have been established with Norway and other sources, and there's decision to increase local production (we do have some).
Bulgaria is in worse situation but we'll try to find solutions.

As long as we're not turned into another Mariupol, we'll manage.
Polish economy is not particularily big but it's resilient.

I believe it's in NATO's best interest for Poland to not become another Mariupol.

Well... if it were mere declarations, I wouldn't trust them - but the declarations are followed by troops and equipment, which makes them more trustworthy.

It’s the obligation of the NATO alliance to provide military aid to its members if attacked.

Yep. I read about the "Phoney War."

Right now, though, NATO interests are at stake. They don't want the Russians to have full Black Sea access. And there was no NATO during the Phoney War.

We shall see....

Surprise surprise!

As if no one expected Putin to turn off the gas spigot to countries that gave him lip.

Right now, 10,000 American troops already on our soil seem more trustworthy than any formal obligation ;) NATO is very active in the region, troops and equipment are already here.
So, I hope, it does work.
Best way it could work would be deterrence but we really need to be prepared for other possibilities.

Back to gas - Lithuania declared they can share their gas import capacities if we need it. Baltic states cut out Russian gas entirely in last years.
Everyone in the region knew Russians would use their gas contracts for political pressure. Only Germans lived in denial about it, until they woke up showing rather ugly picture now.
