Footage showing cowardly train passengers in New York doing nothing to stop an assault unfolding in front of them is a sign of a civilisation in “serious decline,” Sky News host Rita Panahi says.

“Have a look at this footage from the subway in New York City where a man in the white jacket and black leggings is rampaging on a train,” she said.

“Looks like there are plenty of able-bodied men around watching.

“He targets a woman, sits next to her and begins to assault her.”

Ms Panahi said “cowards” on the train simply watched the terrified woman beg for help.

“Nobody stepped in, nobody was interested beyond filming the ordeal,” she said.

“Thankfully, that woman was okay, and the assault did not end in her being grievously injured.

“The maniac went on to kick windows and terrify more passengers.

“What does it say about society that not a single man stepped in to help – they allowed it to happen.”

The most sensible thing to do in such situation is to film it for evidence and call the police or security whose job is to deal with these situations.

Trying to intervene is being stupid. There have been incidents where people that tried to intervene ended up getting killed. You shouldn't have to risk your safety to protect others. It is very unfair to call those men that happened to be around "cowardly". It is sexist to expect men to risk their safety for someone else.

I've been in a similar situation. The reaction of the people around was the same. No one tried to intervene. It's understandable. It can be dangerous. The best we could do was to call the security through the emergency intercom.

This has been happening for years, unfortunately.

But New York is still safe, over all. Much safer than many other large cities of the world.

You just have to have your wits about you when you’re on the subway.

One must actually BE in New York in order to judge it. Outside people, without knowledge, have been giving New York a bad reputation for years.

What happened on the train was captured by someone on the train in NY.
It isn't a good look.

I’m sure this sort of thing happens on the Sydney transit system, too.

But, at least, there’s less access to guns and other assault weapons, so the violence is limited to fists, knives, and such.

There are many tourists in New York. The hotels are expensive, but everything else is pretty reasonable. As long as tourists stay out of dodgy areas (yes, there are fewer dodgy areas than in the past), they will be fine.
