14 People Shot, 3 Dead, in Mass Shooting on Philadelphia's South Street

Quote:
At least 14 people were shot, three of them killed, when gunmen fired into a crowd on South Street in Philadelphia late Saturday night.

The shooting happened on South Street between 2rd and 3rd streets shortly before midnight. Police said officers heard multiple gunshots, then saw several gunmen firing into a crowd of people.

An officer fired his gun at one of the shooters, Philadelphia Police Inspector D. F. Pace said. It is not known if the suspect was struck, however they did drop their gun and flee.

Three of them, two men and a woman, were shot multiple times and died at the hospital.

There were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every weekend, when the shooting broke out," Pace said.

Pace said two guns were found at the scene, one of them with an extended magazine.

Philadelphia police said a separate shooting incident happened nearby around 11 p.m. Officers found 13 bullet casings at 4th and Bainbridge, a couple blocks away. Pace said investigators are looking into whether there's a connection in the two shootings.

South Street(Philadelphia)
Quote:
The South Street Headhouse District between Front Street and Seventh Street is a neighborhood known for its "bohemian", "punk", and generally "alternative" atmosphere and its diverse urban mix of shops, bars, and eateries. It is one of Philadelphia's largest tourist attractions.

The Orlons, a music group from Philadelphia, released a 1963 song based on (and entitled) South Street, which begins with the line "Where do all the hippies meet?

This is domestic terrorism - nothing else.

Hey Alex

Why not just create a permanent sticky thread on mass shooting in the USA?

Off Topic
Philadelphia’s crime spike since has been typical for most American cities in recent years. We had the “George Floyd riots”, crime spikes also, followed the 1960s riots, the pandemic, “no bail” laws, and “progressive prosecutors”.

Multiple gunmen firing apparently randomly into crowds have not been the norm in the decades long mass shooting era. Usually if there are multiple gunmen it is gang warfare, or some sort of dispute involving armed participants, whereby other armed people associated(family, friends) with the original disputants get involved.

It is possible the gunmen at the gas station, and the ones who attacked South Street are the same people.

Magz mentioned terrorism. While that seems most likely motivation at the moment other possibilities include a targeted killing using massive crowds on South Street as cover, or we have a gang of people who get off on killing others. It’s all just guesswork.

As for as Alex creating a sticky he has not been around in well over a year.

The only thing common to the wave of mass shootings in recent months is that they are mass shootings.

Video appears to show moments leading up to South Street mass shooting

Quote:
Philadelphia police are reviewing a video that appears to capture the moments leading up to a deadly mass shooting on South Street Saturday night.

A man seen wearing a black t-shirt in the video was also shot and is in critical condition.

Authorities say officers assigned to the 200 block of South Street heard the initial gunfire and quickly responded. Upon arrival, officers found several gunshot victims and an unknown man firing into a crowd of people, said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw during a Sunday afternoon briefing.

One officer pulled out his weapon and fired several times in the direction of the gunman. Police say the gunman fled, but it's believed he was hit by the officer's gunfire.

Philadelphia police confirm they received intel of potential problems on South Street and several other areas of the city by monitoring social media.

Mayor Jim Kenney told Action News there were 70 police officers in the immediate vicinity due to nearby events.

3 dead, 11 injured after shooting on South Street in Philadelphia
Quote:
Outlaw said the dead were a 34-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man. Investigators believe one of the three killed was involved in "a physical altercation" with another man, and those two began firing at each other, with both struck by gunfire and one killed, Outlaw said.

The two other people killed and a number of other shooting victims, who ranged from age 17 to 69, are believed to have been innocent bystanders

According to police, the woman was shot in the rib cage and was pronounced dead at Jefferson University Hospital. The 22-year-old man was shot in the back and was later pronounced at Jefferson.

The 34-year-old man was shot twice in the chest and twice in the stomach, police said. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he later died.

According to AFT Pennsylvania, the union that represents over 36,000 educators and paraprofessionals, identified Kris Minners as one of the men killed.

Minners was a second grade resident advisor at Girard College and member of the Girard College Federation of Teachers

Friends and loved ones have also identified another one of the deceased as 34-year-old Greg "Japan" Jackson. He was an avid skater at Millennium Skate World and well known in the boxing community.

Philadelphia police identified the third victim as 27-year-old Alexis Quinn.

At least two guns were recovered from the scene, and Police Inspector D.F. Pace said one of them had an extended magazine.

Police believe five guns were used in the shootout. 'Numerous' shell casings were found blocks from the crime scene, authorities said.

In addition, police are investigating several other shootings before and afterward, one fatal, to see whether they might be related.

No arrests have been made at this time. Officers are checking surveillance video to help them identify the shooters.

What we know and don’t know about the South Street mass shooting that killed 3, injured at least 11

Quote:
At least 14 people were shot in the area of Second and South Streets and three of them died late Saturday, police said.

Around 11:30 p.m., three men got into a fight on the 200 block of South Street. Video shows the encounter began as a fistfight, with one man exchanging words with two others, one of whom appears to draw a handgun.

After a short brawl, a volley of gunshots rang out. Vanore said two of the three men in the fight fired at each other. One of them — the man who first drew a handgun — was killed, Vanore said. The other was hospitalized in critical condition.

But the shots in the packed nightlife district sparked chaos. Within seconds, police said, several other people began shooting into crowds gathered outside.

One shooter was a man on the 200 block of South Street, near an intersection with American Street. Police said he fired westbound on South Street. A responding officer, who has not been identified, returned fire, and Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said the officer likely struck him. The man dropped his gun and an extended magazine and ran away.

At least two other guns were fired amid the mayhem.

The investigation continues, with authorities still working to piece together video, ballistics, and other evidence.

Police have yet to identify the shooters, but confirm there was more than one person shooting into the crowd. Their motive is not known, and no one has been taken into custody.

An officer fired at one of the shooters, who was still firing a gun into the crowd, Inspector D.F. Pace said. The shooter dropped the weapon, which Pace said had an extended magazine.

Police responded to an incident at Fourth and Bainbridge Streets in which shots were fired around 11 p.m. Saturday, but no one was hit. Two men dressed in black ran south on 4th Street and onto Bainbridge Street — both of them firing handguns, according to surveillance video obtained by The Inquirer.

As officers were seeking to hold that crime scene, Vanore said, the shootings erupted on South Street. It was not clear whether or how the shooting was linked to the South Street gunfire.

Looks like he found out that violence didn't solve his problem.

As for the other two, hmm ...

1 arrested, 1 sought for attempted murder in Philadelphia shooting that left 3 people dead, officials say

Quote:
One of the suspected gunmen is among the three people killed, Philadelphia police said Monday. One suspect has been charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of aggravated assault, according to Philadelphia District Attorney's Chief of Homicide Joanne Pescatore.

A warrant has been issued for another suspect who will face charges of attempted murder, assault and tampering with evidence, among others, Pescatore said at a news briefing Monday. That suspect stayed at the scene to render aid to one of the men who later died, and while there provided "all his information to police," Pescatore said.
Neither are facing murder charges at this time.

The shooting started after an argument on the street, according to video surveillance, Pescatore said. A fight ensued, and one of the men involved, Gregory Jackson, was killed after exchanging gunfire with another man, she said. Both had licenses to carry a gun.

One of the men allegedly fired toward the group, then turned toward police who were now on scene, Pescatore said.
Police returned fire, striking the suspect in the hand. He then fled to another location where police were responding to an earlier shooting, approaching police and yelling, "'He shot my hand off, he shot my hand off,'" Pescatore said.
He was taken to a hospital by police, she said.

Uniformed officers patrolling the area known for bars, restaurants and shops heard gunfire just after 11:30 p.m. and saw "several active shooters shooting into the crowd," Pace said.

The officers "observed several civilians suffering from gunshot wounds, lying on the sidewalk and in the street," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said Sunday at a news conference.

Five guns were fired in the melee, police said, and two handguns were recovered at the scene. One of the guns police found had an extended magazine, Pace said.

According to prosecutors, three were 9 mm guns and one was a .40 caliber.
