Only if they're otherwise notable or have an especially high body count.

The regular ol' four in an incident mass shooting? Those are daily, a mere dog bites man story. You need only McDonald's employee who showed up today stopped mass shooting with hot caramel, also McIceCreamMachine was actually working level of notability before people care these days - that's man bites dog.

Gun Violence Archive: Over the past 186 days, there have been more than 300 mass shootings in the US
Quote:
As of July 5, there have been at least 311 mass shootings since the beginning of the year, according to the archive. July 5 is the 186th day of 2022.

The Gun Violence Archive, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

Last year was the worst year on record since the Gun Violence Archive began tracking mass shootings in 2014. There were a total of 692 mass shootings in the US in 2021, the nonprofit says.

Here are the latest developments in the Illinois Fourth of July parade shooting

Quote:
Video shows officers taking suspect into custody: Ryan Lerman, a delivery driver, told CNN he had been following the news and noticed right away a Honda Fit that Crimo was suspected of driving, capturing the moments of his arrest on video. “He was there for a minute and then like seven cop cars showed up,” Lerman said. In the video, police can be heard giving commands for Crimo to get out of the vehicle. Police with guns drawn are seen as Crimo exits the vehicle with his hands in the air.

Digital evidence helped investigators determine suspect: When authorities discussed the apprehension of Crimo during an evening news conference, Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesperson Christopher Covelli said law enforcement officials have “processed a significant amount of digital evidence today which helped lead investigators” toward identifying Crimo has a suspect.

People wounded range in age from 8 to 85, doctor says: A total of 26 patients were received at Highland Park Hospital, 25 of whom sustained gunshot wounds, according to Dr. Brigham Temple, medical director of NorthShore University Health System. The patients range in age from 8 to 85 years old, according to Temple, and 19 of the 25 gunshot victims were treated and have been discharged. Four or five of the patients were children, Temple said.

Suspect’s uncle saw no warning signs, he says: An uncle of the suspect told CNN he saw no warning signs that would prompt him to believe his nephew would have been involved in such a tragedy. “I’m heartbroken. I’m so heartbroken,” Paul A. Crimo said, expressing remorse for the families of the victims and adding he spoke at length to law enforcement Monday about his nephew. The suspect lives in an apartment behind the house owned by his father, Paul said, adding that he last saw his nephew Sunday evening looking at his computer and not acting out of the ordinary.

What we know about the Highland Park shooting

Quote:
Firearm evidence was found on the rooftop of a business near the shooting, Highland Park Police Commander Chris O'Neill said on Monday. The gunman used a ladder attached to the wall of the building from an alley to access the roof, said Christopher Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

Details are continuing to emerge about the people killed during the attack.
Jacki Sundheim was identified as one of the six victims in a statement released by her synagogue.

The North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois, said that Sundheim was a lifelong congregant and a member of staff, having worked as a preschool teacher and events coordinator.

"There are no words sufficient to express the depth of our grief for Jacki's death and sympathy for her family and loved ones," the statement said. "We know you join us in the deepest prayer that Jacki's soul will be bound up in the shelter of God's wings and her family will somehow find comfort and consolation amidst this boundless grief."

The death of Nicolas Toledo, 78, was confirmed on Tuesday by Mexican officials. He was the father of eight children, six of whom live in the United States. One of Toledo's children was injured in the shooting, as were two other family members.

One of Toledo's granddaughters, Kimberly Rangel, told CNN affiliate WBBM that her grandfather loved to go fishing, paint and take walks with his family in the park.

Another grandchild, Xochil Toledo, has started a verified GoFundMe with all donations going toward "any medical expenses and funeral expenses."

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering has told reporters that the firearm used by the alleged gunman was legally purchased.

Crimo lives in an apartment behind his father's house in Highwood, Illinois, according to his uncle, Paul Crimo, who said he also lives in the house.

Paul Crimo said he does not know of any political views held by his nephew, though he described the suspect as active on YouTube.

"He's a quiet kid," Paul Crimo said. "He's usually on his own. He's a lonely, quiet person. He keeps everything to himself."

Bobby Crimo, his uncle said, did not to his knowledge currently have a job, though he worked at a Panera Bread before the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. David Baum, a local obstetrician who treated victims on-site told CNN that "the people who were killed, were killed instantly."

Baum said he waited about a minute to make sure gunshots had stopped before jumping in to attend to the victims at the scene.

"The people who were gone, were blown up by that gunfire -- blown up," Baum said. "The horrific scene of some of the bodies is unspeakable."

He added: "I don't think the average person has to see a body eviscerated or a head injury that's unspeakable, to understand that ... they shouldn't have to see that to understand what the problem is with this country."

Two doctors from the NorthShore University Health System also spoke to reporters about the treatment of patients at Highland Park Hospital.

"There have been a lot of different events that have happened in the United States and this obviously now has hit very close to home. It is a little surreal to have to take care of an event such as this, but all of us have gone through extensive training," said Temple, the system's medical director.

Dr. Mark Talamonti, chairman of surgery for the health system, praised the "heroic effort" of hospital trauma surgeons, but called Monday a "tough day."

"There's a lot of emotions, but these trauma surgeons, their reflexes are extraordinary. They know exactly what to do," Talamonti said. "So you stand in awe at their competency and their professionalism. But it breaks your heart to see people -- innocents -- essentially wounded."

Trump-backed Illinois gubernatorial candidate apologizes for 'Let's move on' comment
Quote:
A Republican gubernatorial candidate in Illinois, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has apologized after asking people to "move on" to celebrate Independence Day while also leading a prayer for those impacted by the mass shooting in Highland Park. The suspected gunman was still at large at the time.

Illinois state Sen. Darren Bailey, who recently won the GOP primary for governor, was in the nearby Chicago suburb of Skokie preparing for the village’s own Fourth of July parade when he went live on Facebook at 11:45 a.m., less than two hours after the shooting unfolded in neighboring Highland Park.

"We are here in Cook County in the beautiful community of Skokie getting ready for the Independence Day parade, and it was canceled. Unfortunately, about 20 minutes away from here in Highland Park, there was a shooting. There were several people that we know have been shot. That’s all we know," Bailey said, surrounded by a group of supporters holding American flags and campaign signs.

"And we’re just going to take a moment and pray for the families. Friends, let’s pray for the law enforcement, and even the organizers of this parade. They’ve done an amazing job," he said. "There’s a lot of confusion and frustration in the parade being canceled, but they did the right thing because people’s safety has got to come first. The shooter is still at large, so let’s pray for justice to prevail."

"And then let’s move on and let’s celebrate the independence of this nation," the candidate said. "We know the mission. We’ve got to get corruption and evil out of our government, and we have got to elect men and women of honor and courage to get this country and this state back on track."

He then led the group in prayer, asking God for justice, to look after the families affected in the Highland Park shooting, to heal those with mental illnesses and to protect law enforcement

In a statement viewed by Business Insider, Bailey apologized for some of the comments he made on the live stream.

My intent was to pray for the victims and those affected by today's tragedy and for the shooter to be caught and prosecuted without further loss," Bailey said in the statement viewed by the outlet. "I apologize if in any way we diminished the pain being felt across our state today."

Rant:
How about “I apologize for being a dick by further adding to the pain felt across the state today and further traumatizing those directly affected”. How many times do you need to remind us you are praying for those involved. We get it. We have the ability to read your original statement.

7th victim dies after Highland Park mass shooting; suspect fired 70 rounds, wore women's clothing to avoid detection

Quote:
Highland Park mayor Nancy Rotering said charges are likely to be filed later Tuesday.

This comes as police confirmed a 7th victim has died from the shooting.

Authorities said he dressed as a woman to hide his tattoos and blend in with the crowd.

Police reveal two prior run-ins with alleged Highland Park shooter
Quote:
Robert "Bobby" E. Crimo III, 21, had two previous encounters with police in Highland Park, with the most recent in September 2019 over a "mental health issue" in which Crimo threatened to kill members of his family, Christopher Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said in a news briefing.

The first contact with law enforcement was in 2019 after a person contacted police after learning of a suicide attempt by Crimo. However, Covelli said mental health experts were handling that situation and no law enforcement action was taken.

Then in September, a family member reported that Crimo "said he was going to kill everyone" and had a collection of knives, Covelli said. Police removed 16 knives and a sword from his home at the time.

Security director: Suspect in July 4 Highland Park shooting was ‘sizing up’ synagogue
Quote:
The suspect in the deadly Fourth of July mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, paid an alarming visit to the city’s Chabad synagogue during Passover, said the congregation’s volunteer security director.

“He was definitely sizing up the synagogue,” Martin Blumenthal said Tuesday in an interview.

Robert E. Crimo III, whom police apprehended Monday evening and have described as both a “suspect” and “person of interest” in the shooting, showed up at Central Avenue Synagogue on the last day of Passover this year.

He stood out from the typical Chabad visitor.

Crimo was wearing all black clothes “in the goth style,” according to Blumenthal, including black gloves.

He was also wearing a knapsack, which Blumenthal, after going over to introduce himself, squeezed to check for weapons. He didn’t feel any.

“He said his name was Bobby and he lived in the neighborhood,” Blumenthal said, adding, “I watched him the whole time.”

After sitting in the sanctuary for about 45 minutes, Crimo, who is 21, left by bike, according to Blumenthal.

The Times of Israel Tuesday reported that the synagogue’s rabbi, Yosef Schanowitz, also said that Crimo had visited his synagogue during Passover.

Though Blumenthal believed Crimo was scoping out the synagogue — which he estimated had 125 people there that day — he did not check the man’s ID or report the incident to police. He said to the best of his knowledge Crimo had not broken any laws by coming into the synagogue, and that he had felt he had handled the situation appropriately.

“I profiled him. I knew what he was up to,” said Blumenthal. “But he didn’t cause a disturbance or anything. So I was just watching him.”

The synagogue, which sits on Monday’s Fourth of July parade route, Central Avenue, just a few blocks from the site of Monday’s carnage, hires an armed off-duty police officer to protect the congregation on Shabbat and holidays, Schanowitz said in an interview. He also said there are armed people in the synagogue with a license to carry. Blumenthal declined to say whether he was armed when Crimo visited.

They're approaching two a day. 8O
We freaked out when it was one a day, I feel like doubling that will end up going unnoticed in many spheres.

The worst part is these types of gun nuts will use any attempt to disarm them as an excuse for further terrorism, but appeasing them won't reduce their terrorism.

So....Trump inspired him OR he was already "murderous" and it just so happened he hitched his bandwagon to the Trump circus?

Either way....it's like the field of dreams movie (except in real life it should be called "field of nightmares"). Build it and they will come. QAnon/MAGA provides the suitable flame to attract these types of moths.

I wouldn't completely conflate QAnon and MAGA. All Qs are MAGAs, but not all MAGAs are Qs.

Mental illness and political goals often overlap and intertwine, but it's possible some might not have political motives and be much more motivated by mental illness and a fixation with homicide, especially if the violence isn't aligned with any political motives they might have.

Isn't that the whole issue with gun laws though? how many people currently with schizophrenia or other serious mental illness have allowed themselves to fall into the QAnon/MAGA rabbit hole and also have legal access to guns?

The whole cult enterprise cultivated and nurtured by the former POTUS is like a ticking time bomb, a gift from the orange man that keeps creating a nightmare for innocent people.

Absolutely, and ultimately reducing the outcome is the primary concern whether it's purely motivated by mental guano and they just happen to also be politically extreme, or if it's political motivated, guano influenced, or if it's entirely political, grounded in reality and they just so happen to also have identifiable mental illnesses.

By the same measure, if leftists were behind a bunch of mass shootings the same need to address them would exist, it's just that currently, for better or worse, that's not who's committing most of them.

A weapon-of-war, then?
Because of course, innocent people at 4th of July parades are legally at war?

It seems like the bickering over nomenclature is supposed to convince us that a self-loading carbine with an inline stock and high capacity, detachable box magazine is only a problem if it has select fire as an option when time and again it's proven that select fire isn't needed to massacre a bunch of unarmed civilians.

Can't speak for others but in my case I don't think I've ever tried to convince anyone that an AR-15 or any other of that type is a world apart from it's M-16 counterpart. The difference between select fire and semi-auto isn't that significant when we're talking AR-15 vs. M-16. I don't call my AR's sporting or hunting rifles because that's not why I bought them. I haven't taken tactical carbine, handgun, and shotgun courses for hunting, I took them to give me an edge should the s**t ever hit the fan.

Does it bother me to be thought of as a terrorist or insurrectionist?
Not at all.
In fact, I enjoy those labels. :P

Would you agree that those sorts of tangential arguments over nomenclature don't contribute to any worthwhile discussion?

Personally, that's where I'll start using another term like 'self loading carbine' or something similar with more words in hopes of moving the conversation beyond that part and back towards questions like what's ideal in terms of gun rights vs what's actually viable; if control isn't pursued what other measures might achieve similar outcomes in reducing criminal gun violence; how does protecting gun rights impact other rights vs. how would further restrictions impact other rights, etc.

It's a topic with a lot to consider at both ideal and practical levels, but it often seems to be reduced to very oversimplified stances.

In regards to the US though, there's clearly a problem that if it's not resolved will only lead to increasingly radical solutions being proposed. I'd imagine for all interests involved it would be better to work towards improvements than to wait until there's serious discussion of a constitutional amendment to eliminate or significantly alter the 2nd because that will start to enter the discussion if no improvement is seen and if adequate political will behind it exists nothing will legitimately stop that outcome.
