In the latest batch of US cops acting rogue

Shot and killed black man trapped in vehicle after car crash (I mean he was injured and could not move  )
https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/c ... 94615.html

But not to be outodone, our Aussie cops said I will match you killing an injured half dead black man and raise you a 95 year old great great grandma

95 year old Clare Nowland was tasered in an aged care home
https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-ac ... 326c022694

After the tasering Nowland fell and hit her head and is in a serious condition fighting for her life.

Should policeforces screen for Psychopaths?

Depends on if psychopaths are a cog in the machine making it work as intended, or if its actually seen as an error I suppose.

I saw an item in the news years ago. A young guy was busted for robbing a bank. Robbing a bank because he was short of the funds he needed for his dream...to pay the tuition needed for enrolling in the police academy! :D

That is a conundrum.

I read the article.

It looks like cops are no longer willing to 'talk someone down.' Granted, I can't imagine that someone who is 95 and using a walker/cane is moving very fast. It would be interesting to know if police academies still use the same tools to attempt to weed out the loonies? Or if they have stopped being so selective to make up for the fact that law enforcement is no longer drawing level headed people?

They could have easily smacked the knife out of her hand, but they didn't want to. They were probably annoyed at the ridiculousness of the situation and figured they'd teach somebody a lesson.

That is a conundrum.

Not sayin all of one group are also the other, but there probably is an overlap between the population of folks drawn to crime, and folks drawn to careers in law enforcement. Love of action. Thrill seeking. Thats sorta thing.

I guess the title of this thread should read

"Some Australian cops are just as psych as some American cops"

The problem is are we talking some or many??

In absolute numbers?

Or relative to the respective cop populations?

New York City alone probably has more police officers than does the entire continent of Australia.

The NYPD is a force of thirty two thousand the last I heard- more than two typical U.S. Army divisions.

So the US would have more of both sane cops and more crazy cops.

But in proportion to the cop populations of the two countries? Psycho-ness probably exists in about the same fraction of the two cop populations.

Cut from the same cloth, two sides of the same coin, two peas in a pod, like Tweedledum and Tweedledee - can't think of any more idioms

Yes this is plausible. In Australian states where we have a sizeable aboriginal population the Aussie police have a bad reputation of mistreating (virtually identically) aboriginals much the same way as American blacks.

The power trip factor must certainly attract similar proportions of sociopaths and psychopaths

Way too excessive a response to any perceived threat. Poor soul. Who did they think they were dealing with - Ma Baker?
