There are plenty of cases of beggars who really do need money - and then there is this person.

It's no wonder cynical people don't give beggars money.

One of the first Tagalog phrases I learned after moving to the Philippines was, "Umalis ka na!" ("oo-mah-LEES kah nah").

It means "Go away!"

I use it often at the open-air markets.  The beggars will zero-in on me in a crowd of Filipinos, passing them up just to hit on me.

The tin-cup beggars who seem barely able to walk get my alms. The better-dressed ones healthy enough to follow me throughout the market do not (especially if they are using cell phones).

It baffles me that better dressed so called 'beggars' with cell phones don't realise that having a cell phone might make people suspicious of their beggar status.
