And then people ask "where have all the sane Republicans gone?"

They're very much around (think Weld in 2020, Pataki and Kasich in 2016), but why do they get kicked to the curb in favor of Trump and DeSantis?

This leaves Doug Burgum as the only one still in the race I could support.

Simple, the Republicans who vote don’t want traditional Republican candidates. I think it is a combination of two reasons
1. They never did want that type of candidate but since there was no alternative the Romney, Bush 1 type candidate was the lesser of two evils for them.

2. The “Great Recession” and those that caused it not only not being punished but bailed out increased populist and conspiracy theory appeal.
