We've had green bin curbside pickup every week here since ~2008. I tried to find anything online predating that as it seems it's been longer.. but w/e, even if it's only been 15 years it's been 15 years. All food scraps and yard waste go in the green bins, get picked up by trucks, and taken to a giant compost pile at a local landfill. Wood chips and other things get added, it breaks down and turns into compost, and then afaik the compost gets sold. Not sure if it goes to landscapers or farmers or what ?? but I think individuals can go buy it, too, and I think there's once a year where you can go score some for free if you want it for your garden.
In our household, Most things go in the green bin, but some still go down the garburator. Almost Zero ever ends up in the garbage. And we don't really have a place to compost nor do we grow food. My grandmothers each had compost piles/bins to let things break down in and then spread on their gardens. That's even better.
Since we have weekly curbside pickup just like garbage (every 2nd week) and recycling (the alternate 2nd week), it just seems weird to think about spending 400-600 bucks on a gizmo to sort of process food waste into something. Everyone just puts it all in the green bin and out to the curb every week. Would be weird to live somewhere where food waste was still stinking up garbage.. although sometimes I wonder if garbage Needs some food waste in it to make things rot and breakdown over time faster/better ?? I dunno. If I let a bit of food waste go in the garbage that's how I justify leaving it there.. it'll help something break down.

I have made Composting a special interest for years.
No need for electricity, anybody can learn how to compost in small or large quantities.
When done correctly there is no smell, no bugs, almost no mess. Easy Peasy!
Compost is the cycle of life complete from living matter to soil and back again, over and over. Fascinating stuff.
I have asked my family to cremate me when I am gone and throw the ashes on the compost pile. <3

People could do it, but it doesn't really work if you have a very small plot of land or ~no land at all and live in a condo/apartment.
Curbside pickup of green waste to be composted at a central site works pretty good for cities.
Even better is if people don't waste food in the first place and minimize what has to get composted. So dumb how much food people throw away.
