I'm not sure this is particularly mysterious. In order to have a gas planet, you need a large enough mass to keep the gas from escaping. The only way that you could have a moon that large would be to have an absolutely massive planet for it to orbit around. I'm not even sure you could have such a large planet as it would likely be collapsing in on itself. Jupiter barely escaped becoming another sun and it's not anywhere near large enough to have a gas planet orbiting it.
