Excuse my ignorance but when is this thing?

april 8, 1:58PM local time here in KC. it will cross over northeastern canada around Niagara Falls, Ont., Kingston, Ont., Montreal, Que., Fredericton, N.B., and Gander, Nfld. totality will occur Mon, Apr 8, 2024 at 3:12 pm EDT. GO to the zone of totality [aforementioned cities] if you possibly can, you won't get another chance to see this once in a lifetime event 'til 2033 in alaska which will be the next one visible in north america.

and even if the GD clouds come a'rollin' in, that just blocks the celestial portion of the event which is just a portion of it, you will still experience night-like darkness at mid-afternoon, with the unusual sight of a "horizon" all 360 degrees around you off in the distance. it will get notably cooler for those few minutes also. cosmic. :star:

Thanks.

I wouldn't want to see it in person, I don't think.
I'm always scared an eclipse will kill my eyes.
I know it's supposed to be total darkness but I'd still be worried.
I have enough trouble with light sensitivity already.

A pitch black ambience would be lovely though.

you're welcome :) it won't be pitch black, just like an hour after sunset, far twilight to be more precise. you should borrow a pair of welder's goggles or the ubiquitous eclipse glasses hawked all over the place. those are mandatory.

My kitchen wall calendar is on March 2023 so it's not much help.

I'm not into travelling, camping or being in crowds.
It sounds cool though for people who like that sort of thing.
I like that it's historic too..

How long does it last?

I bet animals will react before and after.

Supposedly chickens will go roost thinking it’s getting night.
I will find out if that’s true on Monday.

They are hoping it will be thin high level clouds but who knows.

totality length varies by location within the zone of totality, the closer to the center line the longer the totality to a maximum of about 4 and a half minutes. during that time, a cosmic scene will unfold. for me it was life changing.

All the Porta Potties have been taken. My wife is trying to buy some solar eclipse safety glasses.

I don't understand doing that.

It gets dark in my county every night. I can see the dark without having to drive somewhere to see it.

Is it different where they come from?

A niece of mine lives in the path of totality. They were pretty much right in the middle, but the predictions have shifted a bit.

The local school there is not having classes that day because they think it would be dark before some of the kids in the county could get home from school that day.

They are also suggesting that the locals who don't need to get out should get their shopping done early and stay home that day.

Fortunately, nobody is coming here to see the somewhat dark.

On a typical evening, it gets dark there is a twilight where the sky is not totally dark, it is a bit lighter in the direction the sun sets. In a total eclipse that lighter sky is in the horizon in all directions. During totality when you can look at the sun there are spectacular effects.

I just read one of the latest Solar Eclipse weather forecast for my state. As of the forecast from 53 minutes ago, many parts of Indiana will have an excellent chance of seeing the total eclipse.

Hoosiers are just days away from witnessing the total solar eclipse, and weather forecasters are now predicting mostly sunny skies for the event.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis offers a 7-day forecast, and despite the dreary chill we’ve experienced lately, the weather during the eclipse could be mild.

Monday’s forecasts have flip-flopped a bit this week, but here’s what meteorologists are forecasting as of April 5.

Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 72 degrees with winds out of the southwest blowing through around 11-17 mph.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center, based out of Maryland, shows improved conditions for Indianapolis during the eclipse.

The center is forecasting that clear skies are now more likely over Indianapolis and Central Indiana — a huge improvement from previous forecasts that called for at least 50% cloud cover. Northern and southern Indiana are still expected to see some clouds.

Central Indiana, according to the center, seems to have a pocket of clear skies when most of the Midwest region will see cloud cover.

Indiana solar eclipse forecasts have changed as of April 5. Could there be clear skies?
