I wonder how gradually it would have to slow down and then speed up again for it not to be a massive problem.

It normally "spins forward" at 1000 mph at the Equator. Thats why the sun appears to rise and set each morning.

If it slowed down, and then went into reverse?

We would all be thrown forward if the Earth were to gradually slow its forward spinning. Then...it would stop, then it would go in reverse...pick up speed and start spinning backward at the same speed in reverse that it used go forward...with the sun rising in the west and setting in the east.
