Trump signs order to criminally charge those who burn US flag in protest

Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday instructing federal prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against individuals who burn American flags during protests.

The order tells the US attorney general, Pam Bondi, to look at cases where people burned flags and see if they can be charged with other crimes like disturbing the peace or breaking environmental laws.

It’s an attempt by Trump to go around a supreme court decision from 1989, when the court ruled 5-4 in Texas v Johnson that destroying the flag is protected political expression under the first amendment.

That court ruling threw out flag-burning laws in 48 states and made it clear that people have the right to burn flags as a way to express their political views.

“All over the country they’re burning flags,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday when he signed the order. “All of over the world they burn the American flag, and as you know, through a very sad court, I guess it was a 5-4 decision, they called it freedom of speech.

Trump also claimed “you burn a flag, you get one year in jail” as he signed the executive order, but the order itself doesn’t include details about a potential jail sentence.

Trump has long advocated for criminalizing flag burning.

Most Americans tend to agree with Trump on this issue. Polling conducted by YouGov in 2020 showed nearly half of Americans support making flag destruction illegal, while about one-third believe it’s permissible. An updated YouGov survey from September 2023 found that 59% of Americans now consider burning an American flag during protests to be “always unacceptable”.

Or the Supreme Court could reverse its 1989 ruling. Either legal way will take years and would have overcome a number of obstacles. I doubt that is what Trump has in mind. I think what he has in mind is violating the Constitution and daring the courts to do something about it.

Trump has no respect for the constitution. We all know that. Trump is a narcissistic chump. I am tired of seeing his orange face in the media, but he is a media hog. After all, everything is about Trump, is it not? It is so cringeworthy. It makes me shudder.

If you can instill fear in the Population , population will hide and bury their heads. Is is important to keep the public off balance , So ability to respond is not cohesive . By constantly upsetting the status quo. And create intrusive laws to subvert freedoms . Maintain sense of control send troops to any potential areas of dissent . Regarding opposing veiws.
( Notice National Guard are being deployed to historically,and currently controlled Democratically controlled States )..
Noted Mr Rump has been using a similiar playbook as when der Fuhrer came to power.Including putting all of your friends into to key military a Government and Law enforcement offices .

Plenty of the same people who want protestors to be jailed for burning the flag want to burn books that are "objectional."

Here We Go...! Would it be inapropriate to say I smell smoke now living here .....in the USA ?
He has already ordered Simsonian museum to remove all references to black people and slavery ,I think,

no more functional US dept of Education. . no more inclusivity programs ? And books have been removed, the country over regarding LGBTQ references . [Sarcasm Warning]: :jester: Will someone let me know when this party is suppose to be over.? :skull:

Yeah..yeah..yeah..btw Thank you

..some days I get all the words typed out properly with my fat little fingers others and lucky to even get the smaller words right ..got a brain that of it has to type a thought . And thinks am a,ready ahead of my spelling , even whole words ,when I type ..Used to be MUCH Worse at it. Thanks to another oldster on here, I started to catch on... Would type ideas ,concepts and forget to insert the right words inbetween them, to make my writing remotely able to be read. ( Like to think I have improved) but then again maybe not ?.
