In early July, Republicans passed President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, bringing with it sweeping changes to Medicaid. Over the next decade, the bill is projected to cut nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid spending.

Hospital infrastructure in rural areas is limited, so children with complex medical needs are forced to travel to big cities for treatment, often at great expense. The cuts in Trump’s bill will create additional financial strain on already struggling rural healthcare facilities, creating a ripple effect when it comes to children’s health, advocates warn.

“Any cuts to that program are going to trickle down and impact children, whether that’s pediatric practices who depend on Medicaid to be able to stay open or children’s hospitals,” Lisa Costello, a West Virginia pediatrician who chairs the federal policy committee for the American Association of Pediatrics, said.

the moral of the story for trump's rural base is...racism is expensive...

Sounds to me like you have contempt for the poor if they happen to be the rural working class white types.

For the record I despise Trump, but I also fall into that category of people assumed to be his supporters. And attitudes like this against the poor in this country are precisely why I believe, without a doubt. that the left are hypocrites. At least with the right they wear their bigotry on their sleaves and you always know where you stand with those guys.

Racism and other forms of bigotry are an important reasons Trump won twice. It is also a simplistic many times virtue signaling explanation. It does not explain the significant movement to the right by minority groups.

Assuming it is not too late to stop the authoritarian take over an assumption I am far from confident about the Trump is the lesser of two evils voter needs to become the Trump is the greatest evil voter. Calling Trump voters racist, sheep, low information etc will further solidify the Trump is the lesser evil voters as part of the MAGA movement.

It also tends to convince the poor rural voters like us that the left really doesn't care about us. So why vote for either side?

I really wish we could get a third party in this country that was actually effective and could rise up against both the Republicans and Democrats while providing actual solutions for everyone in the US. They would have my vote.

Fairly simple, trump's primary voting base is rural folk outside of major cities, no big secret. this particular group has many who struggle to put food on the table for their families.

If you read my post I was focusing in those in this category who voluntarily voted for trump knowing he was going to cut medicaid, even though they knew they won't be able to afford medical care without a government safety net. Agreeing with trump's hatred of minorities (a common theme with his mentors Steve Bannon and Elon Musk) is one thing. Voting him into government cheering for his big beautiful bill knowing their own financial safety net for themselves and their children will be removed suggest their hatred and fear of blacks, Mexicans and gays/trans > their own health and that of their children. Hence my comment, they knew supporting a racist would be expensive for them. No judgement, it's just karma. And I've seen this a decade ago.

Groups of poorer Americans in late 2015 with placards saying "Cut Medicaid" in support of then republican candidate trump. I distinctly remember one dude had no teeth. Fast forward 10 years later and there's a tik tok by a young lady who expressed frustration her parents voted for trump. Her father was on a waitlist for a double knee replacement and now will have to live the rest of his life on painkillers because he wont be able to afford the operation now medicaid will be cut. She said her father was angry about DEI and voted trump.

Hence my comment. Racism can be expensive.

I get this but do so many poor folk think two billionaires (neither of whom worked a hard day in their life) trump and Musk would actually care for their struggles? Both of them have long expressed disdain for the poor.

And don't forget 14 million chose trump > Romney, Rubio and Cruz based purely on race > employment and health.
Power of identity politics > self preservation.

Rural poor and hate Trump. It’s awful to se how deluded most people here are.
They don’t even believe facts. My theory on this is most red states have crap education in rural areas. I know we do here.
Now it’s biting the farmers that voted for him right in the ass, many facing possibly bankruptcy which will allow big Agri companies to purchase their land.Great for big business, bad for generational farmers.
We do have protests going on against Trump. I’ve attended two, people drive past and flip us off, once someone coal rolled us, and occasionally they yell obscenities. But some wave and honk and give us the thumbs up.

What's the most liberal city in AR? I remember you saying you lived near Eureka Springs.

I live in a very conservative area. A number of people here despise Trump (there is nothing conservative about Trump) but voted for him because the Democrat candidates were as bad or worse.

I'm conservative enough that I couldn't vote for Trump.

It was actually the left that had provided all those things that the rural poor depend on, that Trump is now cutting.

Rural voters still represent 36% of trump's base, compared with only 16% for democrats
https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/20 ... s-in-2024/

Approximately 20% of Americans live in rural areas so obviously a disproportionate proportion like trump.

If you are going to have a stroke it makes a big difference where you have it in the USA.

I was fortunate that I lived and worked near a Tier 1 Trauma center, Hartford Hospital.
Not only did the therapists teach me to walk again, but they gave me a library pass to their medical library!

Yesterday I played golf for five hours, walking the course and playing as well as anyone else!

And yet in spite of that they have always openly mocked us as racist backwoods white trash deplorables but demanded our votes anyways Talk about condescending compassion. :jester:

Do they mock all of you? Or just those, who for political reasons, denigrate liberals despite what liberals have fought to give them?
