she lived a good charmed life doing what she wanted to do when she wanted to do it in the way she wanted to do it, and benefited others in the process.

She was one of the great names in the understanding of animal behavior and communication, and the importance of conservation of species and their habitats, and teaching the world about it. Respect.

Two excellent Jane Goodall quotes:

Quote:
If we kill off the wild, then we are killing a part of our souls.

Quote:
You cannot share your life with a dog and not know perfectly well that animals have personalities, minds, and feelings.

RIP Jane Goodall.

She is the one who discovered that the Common chimps are a bunch of patriarchal uncanny violent jerks, who plan, make plots, form alliances, do politics, assassinate, conquer lands and wage wars (like..*gulp*...humans), and not some amusing silly creatures as previously thought.

Documenting the Gombe Chimp civil war was one of her greatest works.

Tbh I didn't know much of anything about her until I read about The Far Side comic controversy. It shows two chimpanzees, a husband and wife, possibly, grooming each other, when one of them, the wife chimp possibly, finds a blonde human hair on the husband chimp, and then she asks if he's been "conducting a little 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp again". The cartoon deeply offended many people, but when Jane herself read the cartoon, she thought it was amusing. She also praised the Far Side in general because of its animal characters.

I heard about Jane Goodall on my local NPR radio station on FM radio.

Jane Goodall was truly hardcore. As a young woman, she went deep into the jungle in a land that was foreign to her and earned trust and acceptance from some wild chimpanzees. Jane Goodall also documented tool use and other intelligent behavior. Many other species do have individual personality and are more intelligent than some humans might give them credit for. Jane Goodall documented both the good and the bad. In the "bad" category, two chimpanzee tribes fought a war against each other, set up their own border patrols, and committed acts of violence against random innocent civilian chimpanzees from the other tribe.

In the 1960's and earlier, there was still a lot of anti-animal bias from both the scientific world and the religious world, with all non-human animals (including your cat or dog) being portrayed as mindless automatons. Jane Goodall pushed back against that viewpoint. For that, she has my respect.
